Well, Kenny also mentioned that the bet was bigger than he would normally make, but it was based on a read of that particular player.
I think the reall point is this: Take x as the amount someone with a straight will bet and c as the amount of your check-raise.
As I see it, the point is simply that you automatically get x with the CR, and that your call frequency is going to be higher on the check-raise than it would be if you just fired out x + c from the beginning (and the amount c that you choose is going to depend on who fires--information which you also have after the CR but don't if there are a few other players in).
I haven't played really much of any NLHE online in quite a while, but I think that hypothesis would hold in most of the live 2/5 games I play...
