You have the bankroll, so if you have the skill level, I'd give it a shot and see how it goes. There's nothing wrong with taking a shot then dropping back down if things don't go well.
If the variance bothers you, yeah it is kinda serious. You are about to double your variance (moneywise) and playing a 50BB stack invites some variance. You should seriously ask yourself whether you are prepared to lose $50 on a hand.
Drawbacks to 50bb stacks are less post flop play. The longer the hand is, the better I think my advantage is, so half stacks cut into that advantage. Nevetheless, that can be made up for on a donkalicious site with superior preflop play. If you can practice better hand selection, then you should be able to achieve a nice winrate.
Personally, I wouldn't enjoy playing 6 tables with no PT support where you have to go into bot mode. Where's the thinking? Where's the outplaying your opponents? I'd be seriously bored. As for donks vs. shorter stacks; if you think there is enough room for some post flop play, then I'd stay there. If it's all automatic, I just wouldn't have any fun. I play for recreation, though, and if I needed to pay bills with the money then I'd play wherever I thought my EV was the highest.
