I took A LOT of heat fors this one

$1/2 NL at Stars

I have lost about $100 at this table and others might think I'm tilting from my chatting. I wasn't on tilt but I definately was trying out a more loose-aggressive approach in hopes of getting paid with my big hands, since there were lots of big stacks at the table.

Playing 7-handed, I get [Ah][Kd] in the CO. Folded to the guy to my right who raises to $5. He likes raising small preflop with a wide range of hands and plays slightly LAG postflop. I re-raise to $18 trying to isolate him. He calls and we are headsup. He has almost $500. I have $176.

If it helps to see what he's like, I played a hand against him earlier. He open-minraises on the button. I call in the SB with [Kh][Th] and BB calls as well. Flop comes T54r and I lead for $10 into the $12 pot. He calls. Turn is 5 and we both check. River comes K and I bet $22 into $30 pot. He raises to $72. I have played $2/4 with him before and have seen him bluffing the river more than once so I decided to call with no flush possible. He had 44 for the boat.

Anyway, back to the hand.

Pot is $39. Flop comes [9h][4h][3h]. He checks. I bet $24. He min-raises me to $48. If I call, I'll have $110 left. Clearly I can't fold here but if I flat-call I know he's gonna lead the turn for a big bet. So I decide to push. It looked like he either had an overpair without a heart or an overpair with a heart. Either way I had plenty of outs and decent folding equity, especially if he didn't have a heart with his pair. He insta-called with [Kh][Qh]. I hit a river heart and he goes off on me for a good ten minutes calling me a fish and critiquing my play. Others chime in and say how terrible my play was, etc. etc.

Was my play really that bad?

I dont think its that bad, but Im not crazy about it either. Mainly because I think you overestmate you folding equity. Most people who min check raise you are not folding.

I really don't think this is a horrible play at all, did you get lucky to win, yes. This play smells to me of someone protecting an overpair and not wanting you to see anymore cards to draw at your big heart. If this is the case you are likely drawing at 15 outs if he has a pair lower than K's. Assuming he has one heart you are 50/50 to win and you are getting much better odds than 1:1 plus you are getting a lagre amount of fold equity. Flopped flush's are rare and there is always the chance your opponant who is not a very good player could also be semi-bluffing with KhQx and you have him almost drawing dead. Risky yes, but I dont think this is a horrible play.

But if he's protecting an overpair, doesn't he check-raise much bigger than that?

When they were all attacking you for your bad play, I hope you made some comments that made you seem truly stupid so they underestimated you the rest of the way?
