Can someone explain to me the reason for raising the flop, besides "finding out where you stand"? Overpairs will call every time and high cards that we beat will fold. We have no draw on the flop and the pair of 7's has little value since it is certainly beat if the raise is called. What happens when you don't hit the perfect card on the turn?

I don't think it's a bad raise - I probably raise it too half the time at 6max - but the more i think about it the more it seems not to make a lot of sense.

the best reason for the raise is if the opponent won't always call with overpairs. and some opponents won't. AA/KK will probably almost never fold. but i know that against certain players i'll fold TT/99/88 (sometimes even JJ) to a healthy flop raise on a board like that.

also a secondary reason is that if villain routinely fires 2 or 3 barrels with missed overcards, raising the flop (while not the most +EV way to play the hand), is definitely the simplest and cheapest way to deal with things if you don't feel like getting outplayed.

i would agree that if you don't think villain will ever fold overpairs, then this raise is pretty bad.

8xBB PRF raise from UTG - no other players in - I fold 87s pre-flop

On the flop I only raise if I have him down as an inveterate CB'er - he either has AK or an overpair anyway (or is a total donk) and an overpair is more likely given the huge protective pre-flop raise (8xBB)
Trying to push the average $100 NL 6 max player off an overpair like QQ or JJ here is a waste of time unless the board was paired and you could rep trips or you flat called on a 2 flush board and the 3rd flush card came or there is a 4 straight or 4 flush on board.

Here I don't like the the pre-flop call, don't like the flop re-raise (and min-raise would get him off AK most times anyway) and would check behind for the free card - at $100 ^ max just because they slow down to a big re-raise doesn't mean they won't call you down with that overpair or TPTK if you donk push the turn..
