I agree on the table selection part - I play anywhere between 1 - 8 tables at a time depending on how i'm feeling when I sit down to play. Mostly i'll play NL100 but i've recently started adding in some NL200 tables if there's a juicy game since my roll now supports it, and every now and then i'll even sit in on a NL50 game or two either because it's a good game, or because i want to lower my variance overall (it seems to work)..
As far as sustainable winrates at NL50 go, well really..the sky's the limit. 5PTBB/100 is definitely possible playing 8 tables, but probably only for a small group of people (I tried and got somewhere around 3PTBB/100), and then there are the even smaller group (AP10) who could probably get close to 10PTBB/100, seeing as how he manage 5ptbb/100 at NL200 (an amazing feat)..
One reason i'd prefer to have 2.5PTBB/100 playing 8 tables of NL100 rather than 5PTBB/100 playing 8 tables of NL50 though is that you can make twice as much through bonuses - so while the variance through poker play might be higher, your overall winnings should be greater, too, which at the end of the day, if you can handle some variance and control your emotions (something vvv important IMO if you want to play so many tables) then i would say NL100 is the way to go..
Also, if/when you move up a level or hit a rough patch, i reccomend dropping down to 4 or 5 tables, it helps you plug some leaks in your game and will lower the variance, stress, concentration required and everything else that goes along with 8 tabling.
My $0.02.
Poker is silly.
It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.
Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.
