What do you do with an overpair out of position

Postby LuparFiend » Fri May 19, 2006 10:37 am

A pretty general question here.

Assume you don't have a solid read on Villain. Say you have a high pocket pair and raise it up in Early or middle postion. And say only one person calls who has position on you.

And then say that the flop comes all unders. And then say you bet 3/4 pot, and villain re-raises 3 times your bet.

What do you usually do here?
What if there are two of one suit or two cards that are connected?
What if the board is rainbow and uncoordinated?
What if villain only has half a stack?
What if villain has a double or triple stack?

I know that there is a lot of missing information, and you have to go on your gut feel and whatever reads you have.

I ask this question, because this happened to me this moring.

I had pocket kings and raised it up 4x BB. Button called. Flop came 3TJ. I bet 3/4 pot, he raised 3 times that ammount. I thought for a while and pushed all-in (I didn't have a full stack, only 3/4 stack). I was going to just triple the bet again, but decided that that would pretty much pot commit me anyways, so I pushed all-in. Well, he folded. But I am wondering if I made the right play.

Thanks

Well it really depends on my over pair too. Pocket KK is pretty good. Say you had JJ, well you might have been cold called pf by AA/KK/QQ.

This one is pretty tough to do without a read. Most two pair/sets are going to not raise you THAT much so I don't mind your push.

it also depends on what kind of under cards flopped..

say you had JJ and the flop came 3/7/T

If you lead and get raised, then your only hope is that you're up against A/T. But like everyone is going to say, it depends.

Folding is not a bad option, without reads. Sometimes I push, most times I fold.

If you have KK and the flop is Qxx rainbow, it's possible you're up against a TP type of hand and your overpair is good. If the flop is 963 rainbow and you get raised, you should fear a set. Would this guy raise with TT on that board? You need to have some idea on how aggressive the other player is. Know if he raises the flop with a flush draw, TPTK, weak top pair, set.

In general, I will give less weight to the actions of a shorter stack (1/2 stack or less), and I'll be less likely to fold an overpair. If you have 2-3x stack, and you're up against another 2-3x stack, you have to be much more careful. You would want a flush/straight/set type of hand to play for your stack, not a 1 pair type of hand.

Pretty general answer given that the question was general.
