Why is KQo a favorite over AJo and 88?

I just finished reading Phil Gordons Little Green Book. Excellent read.
He showed some surprising preflop matches.
One is that KQo is a small favorite against AJo and 88 (dependent on the suits). I think and think and think and I still do not know why it is.
Without the 88 the AJo is a 60-40 favorite over KQo and without the AJo the 88 is a 54-46 favorite over KQo.
Help please!
