Rise Against is a perfect example of modern punk music, and another of my favorites.

I hate generic punk rock. Green Day epitomise pretty much everything that went wrong with punk - the uniform clothes and uniform attitudes that replaced the DIY ethos and individualism; the cynical retreading of old Clash songs for a new generation unfamiliar with the originals; the lack of any humour or irony in a punk-by-numbers song like American Idiot.

Saw the Clash, the Damned and a few more obscure (and shitty) bands etc in the late '70s, but not the Pistols unfortunately. We got pretty much swept along by all the musical changes that were happening at the time, London being its epicentre...it was impossible not to.

The best punk band ever remains the Pistols, by a mile. What a bunch of anti-intellectual working class kids with a love of the Stooges/Dolls/Can/Bowie (and instruments stolen from the likes of Elton John and Bowie) did was ground breaking, and the passing of time (30 years now, LOL!) has only strengthened this view. They did it first, they did it best.

Their best song was probably a B side called Satellite, and was the only "love" song they ever wote...

Stooges - Search and Destroy. A notorious gig of theirs in London that ended in a riot in '73 was attended by various Pistols-to-be, amongst others. This is what you get when combine a singer with an abnormally high IQ and an insatiable desire for self-destruction, with a guitarist just released from a detention centre.

If you don't either already have a copy of Raw Power (preferably NOT the remastered one), please just get it - trust me, I know what I'm talking about here... and if you wanted to demo rock n roll to someone from Planet Xrurtasdf who'd never heard Human music before, you'd play them Fun House.
