How much HP crapware is still installed on this computer?
If this were a new Vista build, i would suspect the Drive Indexing feature was still running, but even on the slowest machine it would be done within the first 24 hours of operation.

It is a new Vista machine. 2 machines on the network. I had a failed attempt to install an external harddrive on the network, but it turned out not to be Vista compatible even though it was marketed as such. I'm pretty sure some of that software is still on the computer.
I don't know about HP crapware, other than I get annoying pop-ups from HP wanting to do something or another whicih I always decline.

Just upgrade your flash player to the newest version to fix the YouTube video stopping problem :

Use msconfig to stop all HP crap from starting, see if that solves the problem
