the point that i think people miss about lag play is that they typically aren't playing a big pot without a big hand (relatively speaking). as such, the big pots often slide their way while they might lose a lot of medium-sized pots when they miss.
other lag benefits:
- monsters get paid off
- lots of opponents giving free "pot control" by checking behind on the river when that blank hit because "it must have hit that lag".
when you beat someone into submission, they actually start playing quite badly. the key lag leak is not knowing when to fold against tight players.
