My poker history for those who don't know:
- I learnt the game in 2006 for fun and only played play money on PokerStars (making > $20 mil lol)
- I started playing cash games in October 2007 at $10NL with 8 ptBB/100 and moved up
- I went on a 17-BI downswing at $25NL and had to move back down to $10NL to rebuild
- I moved up to $50NL in January 2008 after beating $25NL for 5 ptBB/100
- I took a shot at $100NL in February and it didn't go so well
- I continued to downtick at $50NL for a total of 30-BI downwards into March
- I started getting coaching around that time and now I've picked it back up
- Lifetime I've only played around 60k hands of NL 6-max cash which is nothing but I think I've experienced what some of the swings can be like
My background, and why I think I should take a shot at going pro:
- I used to play competitive Counter-Strike and I have been through all the ranks of competitive leagues, winning several tournaments, signing contracts with sponsors, and competing with national level teams
- I've been playing that original game (CS 1.6, NOT CS:Source) competitively for over 7 years so I don't get tired of games easily
- Before I was introduced into poker, pro-gaming was something I was planning on doing after I graduated anyway, but since then I've been playing a lot less and focusing a lot more on poker. Plus there is no money to be made in gaming unless you're in the top 1% of players
- I'm a grinder. Laugh as much as you want but I used to skip school in highschool and played 8-10 hours a day of a game called Ragnarok Online 2 years on and off (mostly during summer though)
- I was also a Varsity athlete in badminton so as you can see I'm a very competitive person and I know how to move up through skill levels
The schedule I would follow if I were to go pro:
9:00-9:30AM Wake up, eat breakfast
9:30-12:30PM Poker session
12:30-2:00PM Workout, shower
2:00-3:00PM Lunch
3:00-6:00PM Poker session
5:30-8:00PM Dinner, leisure
8:00-11:00PM Study, blog
11:00-12:30PM Shower, leisure
12:30AM+ Sleep
5 days a week, 48 weeks a year
My expected monthly expenses:
Rent & Food: $0
Car Insurance & Gas: $300
Leisure (includes eating out and gym membership): $300
Poker training (videos, coaching): $500
The plan would be to dabble into my savings ($16k after tax returns atm) slowly until I moved up to $100NL and had a 60-BI roll, at which point I would start withdrawing to cover my monthly expenses while still building my roll to play higher.
It sounds good on paper, but in reality it might take a little while. But I've got enough saved up to easily live a year with no income, and if I really can't pick things up off the ground by then I will obviously consider going back to work.
I plan on starting a new website/blog to track my progress if I ever do this, that way I can fill the gap on my resume with something.
Let me know what you think.
