Glad you all missed me
Anyhow, I've not been posting lately because my laptop died and i've been too busy to get a new one. Can't get on at work so there ya go. Hoping to be back in a fortnight or so. See y'all then.

Yep, NV, I got my camera. I'm off to see the parents this weekend due to it being my dad's birthday, so might have chance to play with it today finally (been rushed off my feet this week with a combination of work, volleyball matches, general life stuff and new gf stuff).
I got a Nikon D40, with the usual kit lens (18-50mm one) and a larger zoom (50-200mm Nikkor), carry bag and 1 gig memory card for just over 400 quid from Dixons. Seems a reasonable deal as all that stuff bought individually would've been well over 500. Looking forward to having a go. I'll be posting any good ones up on flickr, will keep you posted. Perhaps we can sticky a BTP photography thread here for general discussions and posting links to good pics etc. I'll see what I can do when I'm finally online again (can only get on at work on saturdays or at the gf's house at the moment).

What I've been doing lately (just getting into B&W digital) is edit the color picture to get a good contrast of values, convert it to monochrome and then adjust the levels again to get the dark values the way I want them. I think I've had some good results from my first few attempts.
BTW, opening up the aperture decreases your depth of field. A smaller aperture number means a larger hole. Apertures are represented as a ratio between the opening and the initial lens size. Smaller numbers represent a closer to equal relationship.
