Some graphics card manufacturers will cut corners when it comes to attachment methods used for affixing the heatsink/fan to the card. Whether they use parts or attachment methods that become brittle with age or exposure to heat, or if they use inferior Thermal Interface Compound (TIC), these kind of problems can appear in less than a year.
If you are not comfortable with opening your case and cleaning your components, consider just taking your desktop to a big-box store like Best-buy or CompUSA and having them upgrade your graphics card to a $200 version for a nominal labor fee.
If your card were to die in the heat of battle, how much would that cost you?
I'm just saying...
Bring your box up here next time you come up to Indy, and I can take a look at it for you.
PM me.
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.
