I have what is called an slipped disc. In fact, it's like 2-3 disc that moves from it s position. I went to a ot of doctors and only a chiropractor could help. I suggest that you search for it on wiki as there is very interesting information there. They say that it is a very rare thing and is more often than not misdiagnosed. It generally starts when you ar ein your mid teens (it started as a weird pinch (this is the same pinch as a heniated dic, i understand) in the zone of the heniated/slipped dics.
I strongly suggest that you go to see a chiropractor and read the wiki article. It seems that surgery is only viable/solution for certain cases that seem to be the least. I really went a several doctors including a couple in the US and they all seemed clueless. The only one that could help me was the chiropractor i am telling you who is also a surgeon and practices natural medicine (accupunture is unbelieveable man). Also, have in mind that the slipped dics diagnose can be wrong (apparently often) when the hernia is located in a unconventional site.
If it is a slipped dic then you should be able to feel it click in in place when you twist your back. I do that several times in the day and it is the way to have less intense pain naturally, as the pain comes from the excessive pressure created on the disc when i is not in place and also when the slipped disc pinches nerves that goes close to the spine ((this is the main cause and the cause of the most intense pain).
You should have very tight (inflexible) hamstrings and practically no strength in your glutes (some of the most powerful muscles in the body). This makes general life harder than it has to be. My doctor recommended a solid weightlifting program focused on strengthening the core muscles (specially spinae erectores and abs) and i have to tell you that after i started lifting back in june 2007, the pain is practically gone.
Just have in mind that it is recommended that you hire a qualified Personal trainer (this is nothing but easy!!! Most of them are clueless) because you could injure yourself even more.
I feel your pain because i have been there. BUt you can get better with proper treatment. In my case it was hard to find but after i did, everything got so much better...GL.
