The Wild West & Poker - NL Tourny Tips and Martha Jane

Postby WildBillHickok » Fri Dec 10, 2004 9:21 am

Her name was Martha Canary... Living in a man's world, she could still hang
with most of the men.(she often ended up at a final table in NL
Hold'em) She could out fight, out drink, out smoke, out curse, out
spit, out bullwhip, and out shoot a lot of men in Deadwood...She was a
tough and brawdy woman... She was unusual. And she played a little
poker every now and then.

Once at a NL game at the No. 10 saloon, sitting on the button, she
looked at her cards...KK... Phil Coe, UTG, raised 5 X
the BB with his hand, a 2 2, Luke Short (Gus) RAISED him back 3x that
with his 2 7 off! Jack McCall calls with his AK suited.
Incredibly, 3 off the button, Carl Mann (Howard) goes ALL IN with his
QQ And one off the button guy, BuffaloBill calls his ALL IN! ...( guess
what he had?!)

Martha looks at her KK again...thinks, then folds. (with lots of
reraising and when there are going to be 2 or 3 people all in, you can
fold some mighty good hands up to KK... even with AA you're gambling a
bit to call... the best poker players lay down some good hands, and
sometimes the best hands...but this will pay dividends over the long
run...you'll SAVE more by laying down....and money saved, is money won)
Phil Coe folds his 2 2. Luke folds, McCall goes all in too.

There were 3 people now in the pot... Martha made a good lay down.
Flop comes 2 2 J rainbow... turn 3, river Q. AA and AK cracked
again. (play AK carefully and get away from it if a lot of action
coming down...maybe bet it with all low cards on flop or check, but fold
if any action behind you...don't get married to this hand just because
it's Big Slick)

Carl Mann drags the pot. . .. . Phil Coe goes on tilt, gets up
screaming and whining... "i WOULD'VE had quads!!!" He runs toward the saloon doors and trips over a spittoon falling head long into a bosomy blonde soiled dove. (never concern yourself with what you WOULD have had... just be satisfied that you
made the right play given the information at the time... thinking what
WOULD have happened will affect your play thereafter in a negative way)

Martha ended up finishing 4th place...not bad. She lived to be 53
years old and was buried beside Wild Bill Hickok in DeadWood.
They called her Calamity Jane.
