Too rash?

Postby geewhiz » Sat Feb 19, 2005 8:57 am

What do you think about this play, should I have waited for a better spot given chip stacks?

$30 Multi-table tourney. 45 person tournament, with only 5 spots paying (if 46 people had entered, 9 spots would have paid)

1st place payout was 40% of total.

Final table - 9 people left.

blinds $150-300

PLAYER INFORMATION
Screen Name Seat position
guy 1 $ 620
guy 2 $ 9,170
HERO 3 $ 5,480
guy 4 $ 2,980
guy 5 $ 6,935
guy 6 $ 1,730
VILLAIN $ 3,425
guy 8 $ 8,380
guy 9 $6,280

HERO dealt [8s] [9s] in cutoff

HAND ACTIONS
Player Action

All fold to me
Hero Raise to $ 740.00
Villain in BB Call $ 440.00

Betting round completed Last active pot = $1,630

Card dealt to table [Th] [5c] [Jh]

Villain Bet $ 800.00
Hero raise All-in $ 4,740
Villain call All-in $ 1,885.00
Hero Return uncalled portion of bet $ 2,055

Hero shows [8s] [9s]
Villain shows [As] [Tc]

Card dealt to table [Th] [5c] [Jh] [9h] [4c]

1/2 hour earlier same player had led into me on a flop in a pot I raised preflop, and I had raised him back and he folded.

What do you think about this play, should I have waited for a better spot given chip stacks? I'm in 5th place, and I'm basically playing for 1st place (where all the $ is) with this play, and I think there's a good amount of folding equity here.

i think it's in the TJ Cloutier book i have (dunno which) where he states something that has stuck in my mind ever since, that being

in a raised pot do not attempt a bluff if there is a J and 10 on the flop because it will hit a lot of raising/raise calling hands.

within this hand it played out the way you set it up, you know that if you're called you're beaten by at least a pair(yeah, okay matbe the flush draw, though you'd have think they have an overcard to you) and its a race situation if he calls.

personally this is a blind steal, it got called unfortunately. the fact you have positional advantage means you can push IF it's checked to you, if the BB bets at you s/he telling you twice they have some kind of hand so i wouldn't think there much to the semi bluff aspect of all in, i'm expecting a call and personally, i not keen of the odds of winning.

so what's the right play on the flop? Smooth call getting 3:1 on the call and then hope for a free card on the river?

The correct play with that hand is muck preflop. At this stage you dont want to be playing drawing hands. Your in great shape all you need to do is wait for a real hand. Let the smaller stacks knock each other out let it get down to short handed play and put the pressure on with Ax and PP.

Since you did play it. He called your raise then bet into you for half the pot and now has half of his stack on the table. This is why you dont want to play drawing hands. He wasn't going to lay down his hand. So again you should have just mucked. If you would have just called then the turn missed and he pushes all in, bets 800 again or checks. Any of those and you still lose 1600.

Again with your stack and the blinds only 300 I like to wait for a better hand.

Definately agree with Kowboy on this one. But if you are gonna play drawing hands, I would play them passively. No need to lose most of your stack with 89s on merely an open-ended straight draw.
Partake in my bollocks, bloody chav!
