NL tourney hand quiz from McEvoy

Postby starstealer » Fri Apr 01, 2005 1:06 pm

This is a hand I've stolen from Tom McEvoy's latest article:

http://www.cardplayer.com/poker_magazin ... m_id=65559

"An aggressive player at your table has been losing steadily and is obviously on tilt. He is overbetting the pot both before and after the flop, trying to get unstuck. You both have lots of chips on the table. He is the first one in the pot and fires in a raise of about 10 times the size of the big blind. Everyone has folded and you are in the big blind with pocket sevens. You think you have the best hand. What is your best play? (A) Fold; (B) Call; (C) Raise, and possibly even move all in"

What would you do and why?

(I'll post my thoughts in another post)

Here, I think Tom's answer is correct for the most part except in one specific situation. If you've got pocket sevens and the raise (to 10x BB) is smaller than 10x the size of (either your stack or his stack whichever is smaller).

If you both have immense stacks (as is implied by the question), I think a case can be made for calling here to try to hit your set and knock him out. Since Tom specifies that the player is trying to get "unstuck", but you both have big stacks - I have to assume this is a rebuy situation to think about.

His answer (which was to fold and wait for a better spot) is certainly the safest route and is correct in most instances. However, I think once your stacks are approaching chip leader status, this might be a place to take advantage of an opportunity.

I agree with the fold, and I don't think it's close. And unless this is a very early stage of the tournament, there is almost no way we both have over 100xBB, so that rules out calling for a set. And even so, I don't like putting in 10% of my tourney stack to try to hit a set, as you can't just consider EV in tournament, you also have to consider tournament survival and the fact that you can't reload those chips.

A much better question would be what you would do if you had TT, and each of you had 25xBB to start the hand.

This is a cross-post I made on another forum but goes well with this subject in a way.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is your basic do you make the call post.

I have been playing my normal tight aggresive game for about 25 mins and have built up to 3500 from my original 1500. I haven't shown more than 2 hands to the table, both winners, both solid hands. I've also been putting a lot of pressure on the blinds when folded around to me OTB, CO, or LP so it looks like I'm a good player but very aggressive.

In the last 3 hands I've had "good" cards and been in OTB, CO, and LP. In each hand I've either took down the blinds, won on the flop with a continuation bet, or won on the turn with an allin. I know the table is getting sick of me tossing in chips and never seeing what I've been playing.

So, I feel the table turning on me, thinking I'm a maniac. This would be the 4th hand in a row I'll be raising and by all means I wanted to slow down and avoid getting into it with someone with the current image I have. I can feel the tight players constructing their traps in the background!

I see TT and it folds to me. Great... I have to bet this so I raise it to 3xBB (240) and it folds to the BB with about 2100 in chips. He's played solid thus far. He thinks for a few seconds and then pushes allin. The overbet takes him off of AA or KK. I get the feeling he wants me to fold what he thought I could be stealing with.

So what does he think I'm stealing with? I've played 4 hands in a row and by all means look like a bully. I figure he doesn't put me on much given the previous action.

What do you do here? You can fold and tighten up like planned, you can call and if you win you're the CL of the tourney or if you lose you're still at 1500 and back to where you started with 40/80 blinds.

I fold here. I put you on a coinflip situation and you do not need to risk that many chips that earlier in a tourney, especially if one of the reason you would do it would just be to prove you aren't raising with junk.
