expectations too high with flopped quads?

Postby Kuso » Fri Aug 12, 2005 2:32 pm

It seems that this kind of hand is typical when I flop quads. On the rare occasion I will get someone with a flush draw or AA to come along, but this is not often enough to make me happy.

Am I playing this wrong by betting? Maybe I should check on the flop and look weak? Or check on the turn? Or are my expectations too high and I should expect only to make a nice profit off of flopped quads 20-25% of the time?

I have no idea how to extract a decent amount of money from this scenario consistently. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

I usually give one free card at least here; for one, I let someone turn a flush or straight draw that might just pay off a bit later (which'll allow the milking bet to work out). Secondly, if someone has 44-AA, you give them a free card to allow them to hit an overboat which might pay off for a full stack.

The min bet would be a bit suspicious anyhow, if you don't min bet often; I suspect people won't pick up on this at 25PLO but against some of the better european guys in the 200 games I play in at Crypto, they pick up on stuff like that.

So, I usually give at least one free card, then make a small turn bet, and bet about 1/2 pot on river if someone calls, regardless what falls. But there's plenty of ways to play it, min betting isn't bad either; it's just that you'll fold most guys with 44-TT who might just pay off a stack if they hit on a free card.

Almost never, I seem to very unlucky in terms of other players hitting an overboat with an overpair when I hit quads. Should probably happen more often.

I did once win TWO stacks in a PLO100 game with AAxx when the flop came AAx. As it was at Crypto, I have no idea what they had, as you can't view mucked hands, but was mad all the same! One the river one guy bet, I raised, the second dude raised back and I got it all in!

I don't think you lose anything by slowplaying the quads and letting someone catch up though; if they don't pay you a small bet (at least) on the river, they wouldn't have done on the flop. Only reason I like to bet it on the turn (weakly, mind you) is that a lot of draws may be possible at that stage and, having not bet the flop, a typical opponent may think his flush draw might be good; if you leave it till the river to bet and the flush misses, you won't get paid, bet weak on the turn and at least you get a little out of him. The drawback with this approach is that it might remove someone on the turn who' might just river an overboat with a pocket pair.

Well, I flopped quads TWICE IN A ROW at the same table tonight.

Anyway, I tried the Monk technique, and it worked better than my min-raise method -- I didn't stack anybody, but it was better than them folding.

I'll dig up the hand histories later.

Thanks for the help.

Flopping quads in omaha sucks for the most part because most people tighten up as soon as they see the board paired or the flop comes all one suit. The only time I get paid off is when someone else flops a boat or turns a boat and they bet into you and get aggressive.

The last three times I flopped quads was in the blinds and with 3 people in. So essentially it sucked. I even tried the "look like you're weak" move and check and nothing.

However, when you make this move of check calling make sure you leave a note on the GOOD players who might leave a note on how you played it so that you can switch it up at a later time and possibly get their stack.
