How GOOD was this bluff?

Postby Spank_her_Pair » Tue Nov 29, 2005 12:24 am

After getting told how bad my last bluff i posted was...
I thought I would check and see if this one was any good.

7 handed $25 PLO

HERO is UTG+1 with [5d] [Jh] [Qd] [Kh]

6 limpers to the flop (sb folded)

FLOP: [8c] [Th] [Ac]
BB checks, UTG checks, HERO btp ($1.60), MP calls, CO folds, BTN calls, BB re-raises ($9.60), HERO calls, 2 folds.

Heads up, Villian has $20.00 left
TURN: [5c] ($24.00)
Villain thinks forever then checks, HERO bets $2.00, Villian calls quickly

Villian has $18.00 left
RIVER: [6h] ($28.00)
Villian checks, HERO btp ($28.00),...

Was this one a good bluff?

Results later.

don't bluff at the 25s.

even if you get him to lay down in this spot, you're going to be called down my some moron with a weak hand that beats your even weaker hand more often than not. that or someone will slowplay you with the nuts.

i'm putting villain on a set of aces, so you may get a laydown here. if he's smart (probably not), he'll realize that you don't have the flush as you would make a more callable value bet on the river. if you play the nuts like this often, then there might be a case where this is not a terrible play -- but i would save it for when you move up to the 100s or higher where people will actually make an attempt at figuring out your betting patterns.

ok... i'm going to hedge a bit. if you have some pto stats that says that he lays down to river bets A LOT (like over 50%), then maybe this is OK. even then, i'll still say that you're going to end up getting trapped more often than not if you keep doing these types of pure bluffs at the 25s.

Thanks for the input.

I did have a read on the guy but i didnt put it in the post. I dont have a read on him as aggressive/loose he is just somewhere in between. Ive seem him playing $25 PLO often and he is usually up money. So I figure he is a good player for $25 level.

When he debated for so long on the turn I figured the flush scared him so I was gonna bluff then. However, i put him on top/middle set so he might call anyways to chase a boat. Therefore, I decided the best time to bluff would be on the river where he has no way of improving (something I learned from The Book of Bluffs). I was going to just check the turn but that might raise suspicion when I BTP on the river. However, I wanted to leave enough behind him so he would fold to my river bet. Therefore, I made a small bet of $2 on the turn. And since the board didn't pair I BTP on the river.

Furthermore, when he just called the $2 immediately I knew he didnt have the flush because he would have thought about re-raising. He was happy that he could chase his boat for so cheap.

Results: Villian thought about it for about half of the clock then folded.
