Straight on flop hand for comment

Postby DODGYKEN » Mon Aug 21, 2006 6:29 pm

Playing $100 PLO at Full Tilt.

I'm sat with $119 in the SB and get Ad Qd Th 7d. 2 limpers to me, I call, BB checks. Flop is 4 handed.

Flop is Js 9d 8h. I bet pot of $4, BB folds, EP calls, MP raises to $20. I wasn't sure here what I should do - I decided to push as the flop was rainbow and I had a [crap] redraw to a higher straight and backdoor flush possibility. Looking back, I think I probably should wait for the turn to push here. Thoughts?

I made it $65, EP raised all in to $100, MP went all in for more than I had. I made the call - it was $50 into $270 ish - pretty automatic.

Can I have some advice on how I should've played this hand please - I feel this is still the sort of hand that I struggle with.

Thanks,

Martin

A read on MP/EP would help I think.

With a second caller there's likely to be a set out which changes things somewhat. In position I'd call and wait for a safe turn. OOP, I'd probably do the same although I think a fold isn't too bad here (not that I ever would) if the raiser is a player you have pegged as being very solid and not the sort to raise with anything other than the nuts. It's pretty close if you can solidly put the raiser on the same straight and the caller on a set (you've got about 30% equity in a three-way duel, though it could drop below 25% if backdoor flush draws, higher straight redraws etc. are out - in this spot, though, you almost certainly have over 30% equity against your opponents' likely ranges).

If it's only heads up you should wait for the turn and push on anything (rationale being you'll split with another straight if it blanks, win on the rare occasions you make your straight/flush through the backdoor, and be able to bluff him off the hand when the board pairs), although against a looser, more aggressive opponent who might make this move with something like a set, a flop push would be fine too.
