A Weak Bet

Postby AkuAnkka » Tue May 22, 2007 6:53 am

How do you deal with a minimum bet or a minimum raise from your opponent? My guestion is pretty simple although there are definitely numerous features which have to be considered. For example, what kind of player you are against and what the board looks like. In generally though minimum or small bet is a rather weak play. As I have learned from this forum there are no reasons to bet the minimum or anything else than the full pot. However, specially at the very very low stakes, at which I'm playing, there are always people using minimum bets and raises. If you are confronted with a player like that how do you deal with him/her?

I guess you first have to find out with what he is min-raising. But let's assume the player is unknown to you. The hand below is an example of one of them. Would you have attacked and raised on the flop? My two pair was not that strong but neither was his bet. While there was a few possible draws on the turn I believed I had the best hand because it was checked to me. However, river card could have completed a straight and villain could easily have had one, so I checked the river.

PokerStars Pot-Limit Omaha High, $0.02 BB (8 handed) from (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

MP1 ($7.32)
MP2 ($3.14)
Hero ($1.61)
Button ($2.71)
SB ($0.98)
BB ($3.67)
UTG ($3.13)
UTG+1 ($5.59)

Preflop: Hero is CO with JImage, 2Image, 5Image, AImage.
UTG calls $0.02, UTG+1 calls $0.02, MP1 calls $0.02, MP2 calls $0.02, Hero calls $0.02, 1 fold, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($0.14) JImage, 2Image, 4Image (7 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, UTG+1 checks, MP1 checks, MP2 bets $0.04, Hero calls $0.04, SB folds, BB folds, UTG calls $0.04, UTG+1 folds, MP1 calls $0.04.

Turn: ($0.30) TImage (4 players)
UTG checks, MP1 checks, MP2 checks, Hero bets $0.3, UTG folds, MP1 folds, MP2 calls $0.30.

River: ($0.90) QImage (2 players)

BTW, I didn't like my call preflop, but there wasn't much raising so I was pretty sure I would get a cheap flop. So why not to try..

I like the call if it were PLO8 :)

But really what can you do with that hand in High, basically you can only flop one nut flush draw or a miracle flop that will give you no action at all.

Anyways, turn bet I think is ok & good check on the river.

Well top and bottom pair is very weak, I don't think you PF call is horrible but we're mostly making it with the hopes of a club flush being the hand to make or a rainbow straight. Tring do determine what his flop call means it very tough, most people don't have a clue what they're doing here and play it the same as Hold Em. So top 2, middle or bottom set are all real possibilities here.

Anyways we don't have much of a hand at all, especially multihanded, peeling a card off in the flop isn't the worst thing but it can get you in trouble by easily making you a 2nd best hand.

The turn I'd check it's not that helpfull and trying to steal the pot here is still tough against 3 other players, and is probably spewing unless you're very confident everyone will fold. Although we have 2 pair it's incredibly weak, and there's a ton of ways to lose on the river. Since the original bettor checked I'd gess him at either top 2 or a small set.

At low limits the main focus is just looking for the big hands, stick to the main rule of Omaha here....Draw to the nuts or don't draw at all. You'll still get paid off very easily.
