"In war, then, let your great object be victory, not lengthy campaigns."

I started The Art of War, in the hopes that it will improve both my poker and my legal work.

I have been thinking about a conversation between Seb and BK in another thread and the more I have thought about it, the more I think that I disagree with BKs assesment of playing time and stop loss limits. Part of the difference is the game that we play and the approach to the game in general.

I have been thinking about poker from a much more strategic viewpoint lately. I read Riding with Stonewall, which was written by one of Stonewall Jackson's young staff officers.

I, with the aid of PTS, have been trying to look at the long term view much more.

Yesterday I had my worst day ever. I dropped 100bb in 3 sessions.
I sat down and went over the hands and determined that there was about 14 bbs that I donked off and 86 bbs worth of getting my ass handed to me (Im going to call the river raise with the made flush into a 45 pot). Not necessarily bad, but playing this style, there are times you brick with split aces and you will drop 4-5 bbs. And every once in a while you brick on a 4 flush or the other guy hits that 4 outer to boat up and you lose those 25bb pots. It happens.

Today I did something I had not done yet, but I redeposited on interpoker. I was down to 20bb and just not comfortable playing on that. Shortly after redepositing, I played for about half an hour and won 40bb.

I dont think that my goal when I sit down is necessarily to play a certain amount. I think it is often to win a certain amount. There are sometimes I want to play for a while, but that does not mean that I have to grind out the ring games. I am going to try to start playing a few SNGs in the mix. Sometimes I say to myself "why didnt I quit at X, I would have been happy with that win". So now I am going to quit at that point. If I want to play more Ill pop in a 5 or 10 sng.

Its a war, and a long one at that. I will have more time to play. I think that, if I accept that a win is a win, I will be better of in the long run. I think that there are times when you can drop a whole lot of money in a very short time. I think that quitting early and taking a substantial, but quick, win helps balance that out. Yes, sometimes you win more, but quite often, you regress a bit. I think you should take the quick win and relax for a bit.

Monthly recap to come this weekend. I am excited.

Again I think it has to do with the game you play. The thing I have realized is that stud is a very fluid game. It is not as rigid as HE is in the way that the game has to be played. I dont think you can sit down and say that you are going to grind out X hours playing Y hands, because you have to be much more reactive playing stud. Its just that kind of game. Maybe you can keep the concentration and focus needed to sit down and grind out a time goal. I dont think I can. I dont know when or for how long my game will stay at that level, because I have to be much more reactive. I just folded queens. I also just raised 729.

Gotta love the naked queens running down the 4th street 2 pair.

Damn.

Sat down and played something like 255 hands at 1 table. That is about 3 hours of play. I was up 20 pounds early, then got beat on.

I was then down 50 pounds relativly quickly and feeling like it was going to be another big losing session. I clawed my way back to down 6 pounds. Then dropped back to around down 30 pounds.

The table started to break down, playing 5 then 4 then 3 handed.

Then it was just me a a guy who had literally busted 4 times. Apparently he had decided to try and get it back off of me. He sat down with 20 pounds when I was down 12.

I sat there and pounded on him until I was up 6 pounds for the session.

Fuckin sweet.

In other news, I finished off all of my bonuses at the cryptos for the month.

I may take tomorrow off and unwind a bit. We will see.

Monthly totals coming saturday.

Gotta Keep It Up!

Postby Juskimo » Fri Mar 31, 2006 10:04 pm

PissDamnHellYeah!

I dont think I am going to play much at all today, maybe a couple 3 mtts later. No stud today.

Ran the numbers for the month. Keep in mind I only have half the hand histories. The dog ate my computer and I have not had the time to get the data recovery from the old computer.

106 sessions
3786 hands
58 table hours
5.42 bb/100
22 % v$ip
15.8% 3rd st raise

AF
3rd 1.81
4th 3.83
5th 4.73
6th 3.58
river 3.86

total 3.07

PT says $482

Roll started the month at 200.

Now at 1650

for +1450 on the month

Works out to about 13 a table hour, so $25 or so an hour on the month.

Damn.

Then a buddy called and then stopped by with a keg of beer he brewed.

Great way to end a long week.

Wow!!! You made $1450 in March. That's better than my best month ever, and I've been playing for almost two years. Keep it up.

I liked the hand where you had KK and sucked out on AA. It's nice when you finally do it, because it hurts so much when one is on the other side of the situation, getting beat up when your opponent hits his two outer on the river to beat your overpair.

Played a few MTTs after finishing my ring play for the day. Played a $3r and finished 141st out of 2200. Then decided to play a $20 stud h/l mtt, as it was starting right after the rebuy I had just busted out of.

This was the first time I had played stud h/l in about a month and a half. I didnt think about it, but playing all the stud I have been playing really improved my stud h/l game.

Here are a few hands and random thoughts from the tourney.

Made it to the final table (and ITM) as the chip leader. I had about 33k, next biggest stack was 28k.

This helps.

Hell yeah!

First MTT win.

$20 stud h/l mtt. 88 people. $528 for first.

I think the best part was that Woody was sweating me at the final table.

I posted a nice little +366 playing stud earlier, so I got winner on the day for a little less than 900.

Awsome.
