UTG minraises. i call w/ 98s in the BB.

flop is 762. i check, he bets $4, i CR to $12...he calls. turn is an 8. i bet $20, he calls. river is a 10 giving me a straight. i shove for $67...he calls......with KJ offsuit....

i've never seen this before.

Totally the dumbest thing I've seen today...but, so was your check raise OOP!! Raise to get free cards...not when you're still drawing OOP!

raising to get free cards is the most overrated idea in NL poker.

the short version is this:

no one is respecting your raise unless it's 3x the original bet or more.

in a typical $100NL game between 2 decent players with a full stack in a raised pot, there'll be roughly $10 in the pot on the flop. if the PF raiser leads for $10 and you raise, you have to raise to at least $30. between preflop and flop, you have put in 1/3 of your stack. you'll hit your flush just over 1/3 of the time, or your OESD almost exactly 1/3 of the time, and there is no guarantee at all that you'll get paid with the rest of villain's stack. it is not hugely +EV to raise with the intent of seeing a free turn card, especially against players who will call your flop raise, and lead out on a blank turn because of either their strong poker skills or their complete stupidity.

there are about a million good reasons to sometimes raise your draws. the free card is at the bottom of the list IMO. i didnt go into great detail about the table conditions at the time, or about my thought process during the hand. but its silly to think that a CR with a draw is a universally poor idea.
