Is a monster hand always a winner?

Postby Mad Genius » Sun Feb 27, 2005 6:32 am

Let's look at a hypothetical situation. The game is four-handed 1/2NL and the players know each other well. The two players involved in this particular hand could be described as follows:

Player A: Loose/hyperaggressive, has an extremely wide raising standard and plays raised flops aggressively. Willing to play big pots on draws or made hands. Has been running over the table completely.
Player B: Tricky aggressive player, good hand-reader and picks spots to be extremely aggressive.
Both players, while looking to make plays, are winning players and know what they are doing for the most part.

Player A is sitting with $760 on the button. Player B is to the right and straddles UTG for $4. A looks down at 33 and raises to $15. Blinds fold and B calls $11 more blind. The flop comes [Ad][Qc][6s] B checks blind and A leads for $15. B now looks at his hands and calls. The turn is a [3d]. B again checks and A leads for $30 this time. B raises to $100. A deliberates some and calls. River is the [6d]. B checks and A bets $100. B immediately goes all-in for $340.

Question 1: Should A call?
Question 2: Should A re-raise the turn? And if so, how much?
Question 3: Other than a complete bluff, what range of hands is A beating here that beats a river raise?
Question 4: Should A take his table image into consideration (capable of raising any 2 preflop, has shown bluffs in big pots) and if so, how would it affect B's decision to raise the river?

Everyone please respond to the best of your knowledge given the info I provided.

EDIT: See flop

1) I would be in this spot because.....
2) Yes I reraise the turn
3) Since he played blind andhe knows that A is LAG, he could have a very wide ragne of hands from AQ to [Qd][Jd] to many others
4) A has to know that his table imagage will make peopl overplay hands against him thinking that he has nothing.

I agree with you 99% of the time but I have to disagree with you here iceman. Why would you reraise the turn? B is aggro and tricky but as I said he's a very good hand reader. If A re-raises B is easily capable of laying down anything less than AQ. If B has two pair or a strong Ace I would think A's best move is to smooth-call and show weakness. If A is out of position I think he should re-raise but since he's got position he has more options on the river. On the flip side, if B has A beat with a higher set then A still has a chance not to loose all his money here. As I said B is good so a big checkraise means some sort of big hand.

Can you explain your reasoning for popping back the turn as opposed to smooth-calling? Against an average fish re-raising is clearly the right play but I'm not sure what's best here.

I like the turn smooth call, guy has no idea the bomb has been dropped with the 3. Can't put him on a runner runner flush draw in that position. Reraise is suspicious, unless he was creating fold equity on the flush draw....could have hit a cheap 2pr.....

Remember, its a 4 handed game....Smooth call plus cheap river bet induces this guy to come over all in with probably 2 pair...I know i get kicked in the balls alot with two pair...At this point you hope he has the flush...and if he is luck enough to have AA or QQ, well, he outplayed you there....
