WEEK ENDING APRIL 9, 2006

Well all in all not much of a week for poker - so focused on work right now with the looming tax deadline and all, haven't been around BTP much to contribute lately or play much poker, but that will all change in another week or so. Took a couple of nasty bad beats that cost me a stack each (I know, I know...that's nothing). I'm not complaining - I'm glad to see I'm putting my money in with the best of it. My BR would be over $900 had my hands held up...oh well, it will ge there.

I've gotten used to three-tabling - the first couple of days were rough, but I've settled in for the long haul. I find I can still get pretty good reads with three tables. I may add a fourth at another site (UB only allows three), but wouldn't mind growing my game for awhile and moving up a few more levels first. Right now, the main focus is on getting to $1,000 and continuing to grow my ABC approach while experimenting with some occassional aggro moves when the time is right (not pure moves, but just being more aggressive - somehow I think pure moves are -EV at $25 NL).

Net profit for week: $71.52

Bankroll as of 4/9/06: $789.71

Won $2.34 tonight. Actually, i don't even know why I logged on tonight - didn't even feel like playing. Lost some BS hands due to CB's continuing to fail for the second day in a row, but a few did pay off so not all bad. Also got hosed with a split pot that my opponent had no business being in. Ack. I'm suprised I won anything at all tonight - overall a waste of time. I hate tax season.

Sets 0-8 (what else is new)
AA: 2
KK: 0
QQ: 0

Tables played: 3 full ring
Time played: 1 hour
Profit for day: $2.34
Bankroll as of 4/10/06: $792.05

Won $1.06 tonight. Bascially more of the same - couldn't get much going, but didn't do anything stupid either. Got QQ and KK abound, actually, but it was either folded to my raises PF or I had to give it up - had to give up QQ preflop after re-raising, and KK on the flop after an ace came and I was faced with a pot-sized bet. Hit one set, didn't get paid much. Other than that, not much to talk about. Didn't do anything stupid, which is always good.

Sets 1-10
AA: 0
KK: 4 (including 3 in a row, 2 at one table!)
QQ: 2

Lost $4.43 tonight. Doh! This was really a de-motivating session. I hit set after set, seems such a shame to watse such a statstically good session with a loss. A couple of the sets came on the turn under great peril - ended up losing one to a rivered straight. Prevented a much larger loss with some good pots on my QQ hands.

Sets 4-8
AA: 0
KK: 0
QQ: 3

Tables played: 3 full ring
Time played: 1.3 hours
Loss for day: $4.43

SATURDAY, APRIL 15, 2006

Won $29.96 today/tonight. Actually, this should have been a whole lot more...BUT, this time, it was my fault. Way too many poor calls with second-best holdings during my second session tonight. Paid off a few suckouts and otherwise pushed my marginal hands too far. Not all bad news though - I actually did make a couple of REALLY GOOD ( ) calls tonight even in the face of scare cards. I think I'm starting to develop (slowly, of course) a knack for knowing when I'm good and when I'm not, even if the hand was well-played by the opposition.

Sets 3-27
AA: 5
KK: 5
QQ: 5

Tables played: 3 full ring

Lost $48.91 tonight. Yuck. Victim of a nasty suckout - opponent had 5 outs with one card to come and hit it. Thus again should have been a winning session. Actually, tonight's loss saddled me with a losing week, but I really am not upset - the best I could do was get my money in with the best hand.

Sets 0-3
AA: 2
KK: 1
QQ: 0

Tables played: 3 full ring

WEEK ENDING APRIL 16, 2006

Didn't play much poker at all this week - this week was the last week before the tax filing deadline, so spent most of my waking hours (and trust me when i say there were a lot of them) at the office. Ran into some tough luck when I did play with CB's getting fired back at me and such, not to mention tonight's suckout.

Going OK overall though - at least I'm getting the money in with the best of it. I know it will catch up and eventually I'll hit my $1,000 milestone. Threw in a few SNG's over at Party with various results as well this week, and almost qualified for the Party Million next weekend - won a $8 sub-qualifier and placed 5th in the $70 direct sattelite - lost there on suckouts too. That would have been a thrill though.

SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 2006

Long time no see - took some time off from the grind to play some SNG's and MTT's over at Party. Did pretty good overall, actually. Decided it was time to come back to ring action tonight - what a fucking mistake that was!!!!

Lost yet another $27.16 tonight. No one's fault but mine. I think I've been on tilt the last few days in general - got smacked around by variance the last few SNG's I played earlier this week, got my ass handed to me at my monthly home game last night by people that don't even know how to play poker (and yet they argue with me that calling off their stacks to hit their god fucking dam gutshots is a good move, and they think they're better players than me because the hit the miracle river cards).

In case you can't tell, I'm pretty pissed off right now. No one at $25 NL should be able to beat me over any period of time. I know that sounds cocky but I really think I'm one of the very best that UB has at that level. I'm seriously thinking about quitting. All this crap for what will probably be very modest money eventually. Someone, please, provide me with a little support.

Sets 3-15 (couldn't get paid - what a fucking suprise)
AA: 1
KK: 2 (of course one gets cracked by an A on flop and the other gets folded to me in BB)

QQ: 1

Tables played: 3 full ring
Time played: 1.4 hours (probably 1.4 hours more than I should have played)
Loss for day: $27.16
Bankroll as of 4/22/06: $769.73

Countdown to $50 NL: $257.43 (like it will ever happen)

RR,

Take a good look at Thxlbx's sentence, " In Feb, you were playing the $2...". That is spot on and I think what you really need to focus on. In fact I'm wondering if that isn't the problem right now. You've been running so good for so long that maybe this bad patch you're going through is being magnified because of it. Going back to look at your wins/losses it looks like you were still running good even as late as 4/15. That's only been a week ago. I'm not the best or most experienced player here by a long shot, but I've played plenty to know that a run of a bad week is nothing. I've fell into the trap many times after a bad run thinking that it's never going to turn around (and as you know I'm going through a small one now), but you know what? It has always turned around.

Now it may seem like silly advice from someone just coming back to UB, but have you thought about changing the venue you play at? I'm only back there a week and I'm already getting a bit frustrated at the lack of payoffs that sets and big hands seem to get there. And at this level I don't believe it's necessarily about how good a player a person is but whether they get paid off nicely for their big hands while avoiding paying the other guy off for his. All the other little subleties of playing good poker, while good knowledge to have, isn't going to help much at this level if you aren't hitting the cards or getting paid off for them when you do. I'm going to give UB a few more weeks myself and if nothing changes then I'll be looking for another change.

Also I don't know how often you take breaks from playing, but if poker becomes too frustrating or even a chore (and, again, I've been there myself), take a bit of time away from the computer and come back in a couple days, or even a week or more if needed, refreshed. Your money will still be there. And personally I think it's important to enjoy playing poker if you're playing very often. If you don't then that along with the frustrations of getting bad beat or losing because of a mistake you made can be almost unbearable at times if you don't have fun playing to begin with. This isn't like a job that you hate where you'll get paid no matter what you feel about it. You start to feel that way about poker and you'll end up playing worse and losing more because of it.

Finally, I guess, try not to focus so much on reaching the "next level". If you play your cards right (haha), you'll get there when you get there. Otherwise you're liable to go into a funk each time you lose a bit a see yourself inching further away from that level rather than towards it. You've reached the previous levels so quickly that it's probably even more frustrating now that you are currently moving away rather than towards the next level. But that'll change, just give it some time. Pretty soon you'll probably be running so good again that you'll think it's impossible to hit another losing streak. Of course you will and you'll just have to grind it out until things turn around again.

In summary, keep your chin up, things'll change soon enough. :D

Thanks guys for the support. I appreciate it.

My (in)ability to take losing in stride is one thing that I DO need to work on - it stretches beyond poker. I will admit that I've been on semi-chronic tilt over the last few days. I'm a relative newbie when it comes to losing, only because I've been spending all of my time at the micro-stakes up until recently (and some may even consider $25 NL micro as well, but I don't). Fact of the matter is I lost very little there, now, there are some solid multi-table grinders that play at my games, and I've become frustrated with the fact that I'm not running over the games as I was before. And as much as I hate to admit it, there may even be people there better than I am. I would have no dobut that would be the case if we were talking about $200 NL, but this is $25 NL.

Kramer - I did indeed take a break, and may actually have come to the conclusion that I'm not ready to return yet. I've been playing some SNG's and MTT's with pretty good results over at Party this week - even had a MTT cash. I may even consider a break from poker altogether.

I'll post my weekly stats tonight.
