10/20 River bluff.

Postby droqqa » Mon May 22, 2006 12:50 pm

Was telling a friend about this hand, and he found it interesting, so I figured I would post it here. From memory.

10/20 6-Max on Party

[Ad][Qd] OTB. CO, a solid regular raises to 70. I call, we take the flop heads up. I have $2600, he covers.

Flop [Qc] [8d] [5s] Pot = 170

He bets 150, I call. I would usually raise here, but I decided to mix it up and call this time, mostly due to the dryness of the board.

Turn [Qc] [8d] [5s] [6c] Pot = 470.

He checks, I bet 400. He calls.

River Turn [Qc] [8d] [5s] [6c] [6d] Pot = 1270.

He bets 600, I raise all-in, about 1500 more, methinks.

Thoughts?

what do you expect him to fold and what if anything will call you that you beat?

i don't like this at all. if you think you have the best hand, call as a straight will call you and I think AA or KK might still call you. AA and KK are the only hands i see that beat you that may fold but that takes a good read on the opponent for that.

I think you are ahead, and I don't think he has AA/KK as I believe he would have raised the turn with those.

The question is will he call that reraise with KQ? If so, I like it, if not I'm not too sure its worth the risk.

unless you have a read that he would lay down an overpair or something I am not a huge fan

AA, KK, QQ, 88 all beat you, AQ is a split

would he bet JJ or TT like that with you calling all the way? I wouldn't

so unless he has AK most anything else beats you, not to mention the random straight

of course you beat KQ so you have that going for you (which I think he may have)

I don't like his turn check though

I like it, but that is because i don't expect a call. Do you think he could call with JJ or TT here?? I really have zero clue about 10/20. so maybe i should just shut up.

the problem here is that i think you're ahead.

this line looks like a weaker Q, or JJ/TT. outside chance of AA/KK or QQ/88 but i think those hands would all CR the turn.

the best part about this line is that you might convince another AQ to fold....maybe that makes it worth it?

I think I would prefer a call. If he checked the river I would value bet, but given that he bet into you I would be more cautious. It's possible that you're ahead with this line against KQ/JJ, but I just don't know if he would call a raise.

Is this player tricky enough to play AA/KK or even QQ like this? Show some weakness on the turn, then bet into you on the river? He might do it if he thinks you're good enough to lay down TP to a check-raise on the turn... I guess your image influences what I think about his play.

That looks alot like how a solid regular would play AA / KK to me. However, I also think a solid regular will fold AA / KK with that action so I guess its OK. I prefer to not go crazy like this though.

I wouldve bet less on the turn.

AA and KK call. so if you're doing it as a bluff I don't buy it. If you're looking for value I think JJ might possibly call.

I guess in the end I don't particuraly like it because I've found people don't fold overpairs or even AQ (EVEN AFTER THEY PUT OUT A BLOCKING BET.)

Youre rigt Kenny, most people dont, but a "solid regular" in a 10/20 game "should".

RESULTS

Postby droqqa » Tue May 23, 2006 1:45 pm

Thanks for the posts, everybody. I think I should have titled my post differently - I pretty much gave away my thoughts.

When he check-calls the turn, I think an overpair is his most likely holding, TP a close second. I think he never has a set here, or a straight. I was planning to check behind on the river, but when he fired out half pot, I mulled my options over.

I think you can make a case for all 3 options here -

1) Fold - he's saying he has an overpair and ppl dont fold overpairs.

2) Call - he'll have KQ/QJ enough to make a call profitable.

3) Raise - This guy is solid and the way he played the hand seems to indicate that he is willing to fold the river. If he was going to go to the felt with his overpair - I think he would have bet/3-bet the turn, or CR'ed the turn. The stack-sizes are perfect for this bluff - my raise would be big enough so that he is not committed. I have played my hand like I would a set, and my image is tight - I think I can get him to lay this down.

I decided to try option 3 this time, but sadly it did not work. He didn't have an overpair though, he rolled over 56s for the boat. I think he played the hand very well - his play on the turn merits serious discussion.
