hand in theory and practice..

Postby Jarren » Sun Jun 18, 2006 8:00 pm

so I am posting this hand both because i find it an interesting case study
read is villian has TT+ or ak, AQ

how do i know? he has raised only these hands from the blinds

preflop call is because I am getitng 4:1 odds. on the flop I call because he I know if he has AK or AQ i ca take the hand away from him.

so thoughts so far? so you agree with that logic or is it flawed? I figure the odds of my opponent having a PP is more common than him having AK and AQ but my notes say he bets full pot when he misses and 3/4 when he hits or is ahaed

I will post more after some comments

Blinds: $0.50/$1
6 players

Stack sizes:
UTG: $66.60
UTG+1: $87.10
CO: $71
Hero: $110.70
SB: $135.90
BB: $109.65

Pre-flop: (6 players) Hero is Button with [Jd] [9c]
UTG folds, UTG+1 calls, CO folds, Hero calls, SB raises to $3.5, BB calls, UTG+1 calls, Hero calls.

Flop: [5d] [9s] [7c] ($14, 4 players)
SB bets $15, 2 folds, Hero calls.

thoughts so far? am I out of line or should I have raised? i felt raising was a better idea than calling but there is a chance I am behind despite my read

Your PF call is fine imo. If you werent OTB however i would of mucked it despite the odds.

I think calling on the flop is the worst possible play you could of made there. If your read is correct than what is the point of calling there?..your just allowing him to see a free card. If you believe in your read u HAVE to raise that flop. He isnt going to fire at a blank on the turn anyways..so just take the pot right now.

calling is by far the worst move here, I made a mistkae based on a read. to be honest if I trsuted my read I should have raised

so we screwed up and called, but lets forgive that mistake a moment beause the hand gets a little more interesting

so the turn is another 9

and the villian leads for $26 into about a $45 pot

what's the best line to take? and what do you put him on?

You seem to have a pretty accurate read based on observation and notes already. When he missed does he let go when raised? Does he usually continue with a turn bet like when his flop continuation bet is called? If your initial read is right and he is on A-K or A-Q then he isn't going to call you if you raise. From your past observations do you think he will bet the river if you continue to call? If he is on an overpair the 9 pairing is a real scare card for him so you may kill your action by raising here where if you call he might just think you are going to call him down the whole way and throw out another value bet on the river. Unless your opponent is the type that can't get rid of an overpair raising here is probably going to kill your action. You have position, I'd give him a chance to hang himself on the river.

Raise the turn. Thou shalt not slowplay trips when two of the cards are on the board.

I just think it is completely transparent to raise when that second 9 falls. Don't you love it when you have A-A on your J high flop and then that J pairs on the turn? I know you get that sick feeling in your stomach. Calling here gets another value bet (or value call on your value bet on the river) against an overpair on the river where a raise might scare him off (scared of trips or a set that has now boated) and it will definitely scare off A-K or A-Q, which are drawing dead and might also make a crying call on the river if it pairs.

I definitely think a raise should have been made on the flop based on the read, but as the hand has gone I think a call here is the only way you are going to get more money out of the hand.

I do disagree with hard2tel though. I might call with J-9s preflop there, but offsuit there are so few flops you can get excited about.

"#3 pencils and quadrille pads."

"Interesting - I use a Mac to help me design the next Cray."

in this hand I am actually the villian not the hero

I have been mixing up my play and one thing I have been experimenting with is raising pocket pairs from the blinds in 6-max

in this case I raised 77

in the acutal hand villian raised all-in on the turn and obviously I called, he didn't improve

so how is villians (my) line in this hand?

CALL THE TURN! He has an overpair for fugg's sake and you don't want to announce that you LIKE the 9! Call, expect him to check the river, and then bet 1/3 pot and force him to make a crying call. If he leads the river, raise it.

You should've raised the flop, though, based on your read.

I think your read on the villian was crappy.
"Million dollar play, ten cent finish."
