Well I tried my first rebuy tourney this afternoon (and cashed), and it made me wonder how to apporach the first hour rebuy period.

UB has an option for an immediate add-on right away for an additional 1,500 starting chips, which I took. I pretty much LAGGED it up for the first hour, limping in to and raising most pots with any reasonable cards, and also was quite liberal in calling raises (suited connectors, PP's, etc. that I probably would not do in a freezeout unless the stacks were deep and the M's reasonable).

I took the add-on after the hour mark, and had to rebuy twice during (once not my fault - was outdrawn on the river).

Anyone here play rebuys on a regular basis? Honestly, I had no idea how to approach the first hour & I'm not sure I was correct in my apporach. There's little to no literature as far as I'm aware on rebuy play. Any insight would be much appreciated.

I go batshit crazy in rebuys. I don't have a goal, I just have an ammount I'm willing to spend. Usually about 4-6 buyins/rebuys + the add-on. In the party ones I usually get to around 30k by the break, which is enough for me to play big stack poker... which gives me a great chance to be in the top when we get itm. The play is so bad in the first hour that I think not taking advantage of it is just a huge mistake. If I see someone pushing with K4o, I will call all day long with ATs, etc. The key is knowing who's playing crazy and who isn't.

For me - I do a maximum of 1 rebuy and 1 addon - mostly to keep myself sane. It is not a question of whether I am more proficient than a significant portion of the field but rather whether my bankroll can support it easily and still be enough reward when I do hit.

I also tend to only do the rebuy if I am knocked out or low on chips near the end of the first hour. If I hit aces or some other big hand early and get knocked out - I'll walk away usually - assuming that I'm probably just not in the right frame of mind.

If rebuy tournaments were rarely run - that would be an entirely different thing. However, with 1-2 each night that I probably can play if I want to - there's no reason for me to "have" to cash in a particular night - it will still be there tomorrow.
