Postflop Decisions

Postby Ted » Wed Jul 12, 2006 5:24 pm

Here are five hands from my first PLO8 session. I'd appreciate any comments on my postflop play. Please tell me how bad I am so I can plug my leaks.

Party Poker
Pot Limit Omaha Ring game
Blinds: $0.10/$0.25
9 players

#1
Pre-flop: (9 players) Hero is UTG with [Kd] [As] [Td] [Kh]
Hero calls, UTG+1 folds, MP1 calls, MP2 calls, MP3 raises to $0.5, CO calls, 2 folds, BB calls, Hero calls, MP1 folds, MP2 calls.

Loose preflop call? Being OOP sucks.

Flop: [6d] [Ks] [8s] ($2.85, 5 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $2.75, MP2 calls, MP3 calls, 2 folds.

I bet the pot with the nuts for value against flush draws and low draws. Is checking and waiting for a safe turn an option here?

Turn: [2s] ($11.1, 3 players)
Hero checks, MP2 checks, MP3 bets $10.55, Hero folds, MP2 calls all-in $8.55.
Uncalled bets: $2 returned to MP3.

Both draws hit. With no shot at the low and only 10 outs for the high, I check/fold, even though I have the [As]. Was betting the turn good? I have the [As] for fold equity and a redraw in case a flush calls me. The problem is I have nothing for low, so my only chance to scoop is to fold my opponents.

#2
Pre-flop: (10 players) Hero is CO with [9d] [Th] [Ah] [2h]
6 folds, Hero raises to 0.85, 2 folds, BB calls 0.6 (pot was 1.2).

Flop: [2c] [Tc] [Td] (1.8, 2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets 1.75

Was slowplaying an option here? I didn't want to split with a runner runner low. On the other hand, what am I being called with: 22xx? ATxx?

#3
Pre-flop: (10 players) Hero is UTG+1 with [Ad] [As] [Ts] [4h]
UTG calls, Hero raises to $1.1, 2 folds, MP2 calls, MP3 calls, CO calls, 4 folds.

Flop: [Tc] [2s] [Ah] ($5, 4 players)
Hero bets $4.75, 2 folds, CO calls.

I hit top set again, but counterfeit my low in the process. I bet the pot to charge low draws and straight draws.

Turn: [3h] ($14.5, 2 players)
Hero checks, CO checks.

With a low on the board and no longer having the nuts, I check. Should I have kept up my aggression to try and fold speculative hands like 5h8hxx?

River: [8d] ($14.5, 2 players)
Hero bets $13.8

I figure I've got the top half locked up and bet for value. Good?

#4
Pre-flop: (8 players) Hero is Button with [Kh] [Ac] [6d] [2h]
5 folds, Hero raises to $0.85, SB folds, BB raises to $1.2, Hero calls.

Flop: [2d] [Qc] [8h] ($2.5, 2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $2.85

I figure the BB has AAxx or A2xx. After he checks, I bluff, hoping he whiffed. Was that a mistake? AA3x or A23x can hurt here.

#5

Pre-flop: (9 players) Hero is MP1 with [2d] [Th] [Ac] [5h]
2 folds, Hero raises to $0.85, MP2 folds, MP3 calls, CO calls, Button folds, SB calls, BB folds.

Flop: [Qh] [8h] [Tc] ($3.65, 4 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, MP3 checks, CO checks.

Turn: [6h] ($3.65, 4 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $1.54, 2 folds, SB calls.

I bet half the pot after no one shows any strength with my weak flush and nut low draw. Can I expect flush to have any value whatsoever or am I purely bluffing here?

River: [8s] ($6.73, 2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks.

I get called and miss my low. With 3 higher possible flushes and possible full houses, I check behind. I figure if I bet, I'm only being called by better hands. If SB had an ace-high flush, for example, is check/call the river a valid line?

Thanks for the great advice. Your analysis seems spot on. Here are the results for those who'd like to know:

#1 Neither opponent had a flush. That probably happens 0.0001% of the time though.
#2 BB folded. I won.
#3 CO folded. I won.
#4 BB folded to my bluff. I won.
#5 Scooped on showdown with the ten-high flush.

So far, most of my opponents seem to be folding to aggression (flop continuation bets or bets after checks). Is that typical?

Fairly, yeah. As you ascend the levels people become more aggressive and perhaps slightly tighter (though you'll see people calling with dubious hands preflop and on the flop basically all the way to $2k).
