Flopping trips... could I have gained/saved any bets?

Postby Jaymack831 » Thu Jul 13, 2006 10:36 pm

First hand. MP1 I had a real good read on. Only raised preflop with AK, AA to QQ, and maybe AQ. CO had played 5 hands at this point.

Poker Room skin
Limit Holdem Ring game
Limit: $0.50/$1
9 players

Pre-flop: (9 players) Jaymack831 is MP2 with [4s] [4c]
2 folds, MP1 raises, Jaymack831 calls (3.5:2), MP3 folds, CO calls, 3 folds.

Flop: [As] [3c] [4d] (7.5SB, 3 players)
MP1 bets, Jaymack831 calls (8.5:1), CO calls.

Turn: [9h] (5.25BB, 3 players)
MP1 bets, Jaymack831 raises, CO 3-bets, MP1 caps, Jaymack831 calls (14.25:2), CO calls.

River: [Js] (17.25BB, 3 players)
MP1 checks, Jaymack831 bets, CO raises, MP1 folds, Jaymack831 calls (20.25:1).

Results:
Final pot: 21.25BB
CO shows AC 9D
Jaymack831 shows 4S 4C

On the turn I almost thought MP1 had AA when he capped but immediately knew he didn't when he checked the river. CO I figured for A9 on the turn (or maybe slowplay 2 pair on the flop) but then when he raised on the river I thought he might have trips. I'm thinking I should have reraised. What does everyone think?
Hand 2. UTG+1 would open up in EP with AJ or better.

Limit Holdem Ring game
Limit: $0.50/$1

Pre-flop: (9 players) Jaymack831 is SB with [5s] [5h]
UTG folds, UTG+1 raises, 5 folds, Jaymack831 calls (3.5:1.5), BB calls.

Flop: [5c] [Qh] [7d] (6SB, 3 players)
Jaymack831 checks, BB bets, UTG+1 calls, Jaymack831 calls (8:1).

Turn: [Ad] (4.5BB, 3 players)
Jaymack831 checks, BB bets, UTG+1 raises, Jaymack831 3-bets, BB folds, UTG+1 caps, Jaymack831 calls (12.5:1).

River: [7h] (13.5BB, 2 players)
Jaymack831 bets, UTG+1 raises, Jaymack831 3-bets, UTG+1 caps, Jaymack831 calls (20.5:1).

Results:
Final pot: 21.5BB
UTG+1 shows QD QS
Jaymack831 shows 5S 5H

Was it incorrect to call the raise in the SB? UTG+1s play was surprisingly good for the level I'm playing. The way I see it, he slowplayed the QQ perfectly on the flop. I definitely had him pegged as having AQ until he capped on the river. Could I have played any differently to save bets?

Hand 1) PF, Why are we calling if you KNOW you are break even at BEST? Rest of it looks good to me. Gotta pay the overset if it happens.

2) I like the way this one went down... aside from your apparent penchant to cold calling raises with small pairs.

Hand 1: I don't like the call on the flop, I would rather raise and try to see who has the ace and will be paying me off. In this scenario, it looks to me you might have gotten more bets by playing it slow here, but I think a raise on the flop here might be better.
Because of the flop action, I don't see CO having AA here(no reraise in position with a cold caller), but any ace really or 33. He could have peeled off a card with 99, but it seems more likely he has another hand. On the turn, with the action, 99 seems a little more likely and A9 or 33 seem the most likely because of his 3-bet on the turn(slowplaying...yucky). Either way, unless he went apeshit with JJ on the turn, called the flop with 99, or played an amazingly bad AA, you have his hand beat on the river and have to raise. At this point, the hand you are worried about(AA that MP might have) has been folded, so you are free to assume you have the best hand and are beting an improved ace on the turn or river. After all that, I think you missed a bet on the river against the CO. 3-bet him.

Hand 2: Next time spike your five. AQ or AK probably doesn't reraise you on the river there with the paired board, call down.

Hand 1
PF: Fold.
Flop: Raise. Let's see if he has an Ace right now to help our play for later streets.
Turn: Looks good I suppose.
River: With the action on the turn I wouldn't mind a check/call here, but the bet/call also looks good.

Hand 2
PF: Fold.
Flop: I'm calling this as well.
Turn: I'm leading out, but sirens go off in my head immediately after UTG+1 raises. He raises PF, calls one bet on the flop, then raises on the turn. I think it's QQ here and it's not even close. I really don't see myself folding here, but there is no way I'm raising.
River: Check/call.
