Just had this hand happen to me on Party Poker - 1000NL. I have a full 1000 stack, button has me covered.

Get 77 in BB. All fold to the button who calls. SB calls and I check.

Flop A23 rainbow. Checks around.

Turn A23A, Checks to button who bets 20. I figure my sevens could be good here, I just call.

River A23A7, Well now, didnt expect that. I go ahead and bet 60. He raises to 400, I go all-in, he calls.

He shows 33 for a slow-played set, and I scoop the pot.

Anyone fault the button here for slow-playing? I'm wondering if the same thing would have happened to me.

I think the button’s play is terrible:
- The flop is A23. If turn is a 4 or a 5 he probably doesn’t have the best hand anymore and if he has the best hand he will not get any action.
- He is button, the other players expect him to bet. Perhaps some of the other players checked a big ace hoping that a player in late position will bet so that they can checkraise. When I’m on button with a strong hand I always bet. If everybody folds - they probably didn’t have anything.
- If some of the other players have a strong hand, he has to build the pot if he wants to win a big pot.
- If someone improves and give him action, they probably improved to a hand that beats his hand (a bigger set or a straight). If turn is a king he will not win much from a player holding KQ.

I don’t think his big river raise is a big mistake, but his river call is terrible.
And I don’t like your reraise on river because you will only get called when you are beaten... :)

The more I think about it, I hate the buttons play as well - any 4 or 5 on the turn - which are possible holdings for a blind hand - and his 33 is trash.

Kalle -

Possible point about my re-raise on the river, but I think I was likely ahead in this case - I did omit some details about the hand that I should of shared. I understand the concept of not raising when you will ONLY get called by hands that beat you - but I dont think that applies to my 77 in this case. His raise to 400 on the river says big hand that limits his holdings to the following hands:

Any A, 33, 22, 45.

Of those holdings, I think A7, A3, A2 call my re-raise, as well as 33 and 22.

However, in this case - I dont think my opponent would play an unsuited Ace-deuce or Ace-trey. Also, checking the hand history - the board was a rainbow on the turn - it read on the river:

[As] [2c] [3d] [Ah] [7h]

Thus, hands that will call my re-raise:

[Ad] [2d] - 1 way
[Ac] [3c] - 1 way
[Ad] [7d], [Ac] [7c] - 2 ways
33 - 3 ways
22 - 3 ways

6:4, or 1.5:1 in my favor - I think this justifies an all-in.

Truth be told, all of this did not go through my head at the time, I just believed I was ahead and pushed. But in retrospect, it makes for interesting discussion.
