Another shortish session -- long sessions start tomorrow! :D

$200 Total Stats
Table hours: 5.5
Hands: 304
Net: +$369

I found a really juicy table on Saturday night -- chips were flying. Sadly, I got very little action on my handful of big hands and was largely flop dead. There was one hand that could have altered the results of this session substantially.

I had top set on a rainbow board with two low cards. Some dude min bet from MP on the flop. I put him on a good low draw, so I wanted to jam so that I could "make it hurt" for him to chase if he whiffs on the turn. Well, the turn comes low, no straights possible, but if he has a good draw, he's got 12 outs to scoop. He bet, I jammed, he called. The flush came on the river, and thankfully he didn't have it.

My thought was that I might be able to catch him with no counterfeit protection and might have outs to scoop him. I was a dog in this specific hand, but I'm not sure I'm a dog against his range. Given the money already in the pot, I thought it was a good play, but I'm not really sure.

What are your thoughts on playing top set on a board like this?

BIG WORDS
It's good to know about four or five biggish words you can stuff into a conversation so you sound well read. Don't fuck them up the way black people do, but don't overuse them either. We recommend putting your fancy word next to a swear. Here are some examples: "…so she walks in all precocious like we give a shit," or "…and it's the same old pedantic bullshit he's always going on about," or "She's got this big fucking turgid zit right in the centre of her face."

regarding the pfr...

i've been doing a lot of thinking about this, and this is something i'm trying out. a PSB pf is only going to get worse hands to fold and the strongest hands to call. furthermore, with two limpers in, most of those fvckers are going to call any raise, the pot will get inflated, and i'll basically be pot committed if i CB. i consider my strong point to be post-flop play (maybe this hand doesn't demonstrate it well), and pumping up the pot pf takes away a lot of post-flop options (both for me and options for my opponents to fvck up). if we were sitting on 200bb or more, then it'd be an easy BTP pf.

don't get me wrong, there are certain times that i do BTP pf, but i'm selective about it.

i'm a little bit confused by your recommended line. my first option when the action gets to me on the flop is to call a min bet ($2), raise, or fold -- check-call is not an option. are you recommending the i just flatcall the $2 bet and BTP when he BTPs (as he would when the low makes it) on the turn?

i should mention that part of my hope was to get a 23xx into a raising war on the flop and to price out some janky draws (e.g., JQKx). furthermore, i wanted to build the pot so that any low draw without a good high draw would be making a big mistake (both in terms of EV and $) if the low doesn't make it on the turn and someone decides to chase. just flatcalling the flop doesn't strike me as building the pot enough to punish on the turn. i could be wrong, though.

Well, basically, I suck at getting table hours in.

The good news is that the reason I haven't been playing so much is due to the fact that my wife and I have found some AMAZING positions in CA that we're going to apply for. The bad news is that applying for jobs, especially these, can take a TON of time.

Anyway, I had a little cooler at the 100s off-project a few days ago. Nothing unusual -- river suckouts for boat over boat, whiffing flops, big draws missing, etc. Of course "cooler" just means that I lost 1.5 buy-ins, but I just have high expectations for the 100s. Anyway, I got a bit of that back today.

For the project, a whopping 16 hands for -$2.20. As I said before, I'm having to spend A LONG time waiting for a seat at a decent table, so my short sessions end up like this.

I should add that, if I'm not mistaken, I am 0 for my last 3 for scooping/getting scooped in all-in pots with top set versus low draw plus flush draw. i think i'm due... :?

Dude, if you think that losing out on one pot with a set of aces is 'running cold' then I need to welcome you to my world.
That's a freakin regular occurrence for me.

Losing with a set of aces in that manner is not bad. Here is an example of a good hand gone bad. Note that the only way he can scoop me is to catch runner runner for flush and have those cards be two out of four cards or I will make a low. That is the proper way to lose with aces to leave you scratching your head.
