Realistic Expectations

Postby Sir_Raise_Alot » Wed Mar 30, 2005 7:19 am

I have set aside twenty four hours a week to play online poker. I am a very tight player and very aggressive. Is it realistic to expect to earn $250.00 a week playing in the $25 No limit ring games on the Party Poker skins in just twenty-four hours a week? If the answer is no, what is a realistic figure.

How many tables will you be playing, what is your current win rate, what is your current limit.

Answering without factoring these things in just isn't possible.

If you're good you can make something like 10-18 Bigblinds/h/table in the long run which here becomes 2.50-4.50/h/table. 2.50*24=$60, 4.50*24=$108. To do it you would probably need to play 3-4 tables.

Others can surely make better calculations, but in essence I think that you'll need to tone down the expectations somewhat.

It's definitely "possible" to make that much money, but like the other guys said you need to find out what your win-rate is. Based on my 25k hands (still a fairlly small sample) at NL50 I think a 10xBB/Hundred Hands is a good baseline win-rate for a good player. So the math goes like this:

Win Rate = 10xBB
BB = $0.50 (2 x the Big Blind of $0.25 because BB is a limit convention)
Tables = 4
Hands/Hr/Table = 60 (you should play 6-max & might get even more than this)
Hours/Wk = 24
Hands/Wk = 4 x 60 x 24 = 5,760

10 x $0.50 x 5,760 / 100 = $288/wk

* You could also add to this fairly easy by chasing down a few bonuses

When I started playing I was making $20/wk
Then $50/wh
Then $100/wk.

Imagine if I thought I was wasting my time?

Ive made $1000 or more every week for the past 3 months and its only getting bigger and bigger every week as I move up and play more tables.

People who want to win right away, usually lose and end up giving up. Thats includes several of my friends who have taken up poker since seeing my results. They just refuse to understand that it took me several years to get here.

LOL Ice, I get that all the time. As you know I have one of my buddies playing Party right now exactly like that. I've helped him quite a bit and playing the Stars/Party $50 NL tables he is down only $200 in over 15k hands.

He can't figure out why he isn't winning $500/wk yet.

He complains that its impossible to win with all those idiots calling with anything.....

He can't seem to find the time to read the books I gave him.

He can't understand why I told him to never call a raise with AQ, AJ......

He can't understand why I tell him to fold AQ, then he sees me reraise with the same hand.

He also doesn't understand that he has a tutor helping him out or he'd be down $2000 instead of $200.

He wants to win all this money but only plays, doesn't study, doesn't bother to learn why he shouldn't do these things. It cost me a lot of money to learn this the hard way. But now I make much more doing this than I do working, as do several others here.

DON'T BE IN SUCH A HURRY

You all have misunderstood me.

I am not foolish enoungh to think that I would start off at the top. If I can't earn at least $250.00 a week this is a waste of my time. I do not mean to imply that I must make that much the very first week I play. The second week will be find lol.

Seriously, the whole purpose of learning No Limit is because I need to supplement my income. This is a part time job for me. I was supplementing my income playing limit $5/$10 at about two big bets per hour. Things happened and I did not want to start all over and build a bankroll again to play at that limit so I decided to learn No Limit.

Searched the web for forums that specialized in No Limit and this one seemed to be the best one. Took some time to read Harrington's book but it is not what I am looking for. Went back and studied Super System. Read the articles on this site. I am now reading the different artilces in the reading list. I will learn the game and I will be very good at it unless the infor is hide and not accessible to me.

Now I am just trying to find out what level I would need to play to have a realistic chance of supplementing my income in No Limit.

Next question. In limit Holdem one BB an hour is considered good. Is there such a bench mark in No Limit?

Thanks for your help!

Sir, I think you are on the right track. And I hope you didnt think my last post was refering to you. I was talking more about the friends of mine and Ice's that can't understand why they aren't good overnight.

It appears you have some prior knowledge of the game and are working to improve. With the right approach and patience $200 or so per week should be doable if your skills are there. I'm trying to get my buddy to that point as well ($50 nl tables) but he seems to make a few bad calls every night that cost him his profit. Anyway, good luck to you.

To earn $250 from 1-tabling the Party $25's over 24 hrs (about 1440 hands at 60 hands/hr) would mean $17+ every 100 hands. With the stakes at 10c/25c now at those tables that would be about 70 big blinds/100 (or 35BB/100 PT style). That would be very tough even at the 10c/25c stake tables.

Now if you learned to 2-table (often folks play better 2-tabling anyway as it's harder to get bored) then that figure comes down to a more realistic 17BB/100 (still at top of range but probably consistently doable at Party 25')

You would also play maybe 2500 hands which would be enough to release the max monthly reload bonuses at Party and at its skin Empire netting you another $350-400/month.

As soon as you are beating the $25 game for a few weeks and have a roll over $1000 you should move up to $50 tables. The pl;ay isn't any better than at the $25's and you can win twice as much. Now I make about $300/week (including bonuses) 2-tabling the Party $50 tables for 10 hrs or so- so you should be looking at maybe $500/week from 24 hr weeks.

Oh and don't even bother trying to play without Poker Tracker - it moved my NL game from 2BB/100 up to 15-20...and it works like a dream at Party

The above of course assumes that you really are caning the $25NL tables. if you find it tougher tahn you expect you have to be prepaed to hunker down and grind for a while before you can even think about moving up.

I have a 20" monitor so I can play 3 -4 tables and see all the action all the time. I can still easily watch the other players and get good reads since Im not flipping back and forth between tables and I dont miss anything even when Im not in the hand.
