A question about CBs....

Postby PokerWolf » Fri Aug 11, 2006 10:32 am

I don't post a lot. I am still trying to figure out what makes sense and what doesn't in this game! :? I do try to read as many of the post here as I can. I apogize if this topic has been covered... This is the type of question that probably comes up every few months, but I haven't found the answers yet. Thanks in advance for any help.

As I understand it, a CB is used when you raised preflop, and missed the flop.

Do you do this every every time? How about when you are in EP? Or there are 3 or more callers and it is a drawing board?

I have heard that 3/4 of the pot is about right? Do you vary this? Otherwise I would assume everyone else would figure you for a CB.

Finally, if you do make a CB in EP, what do you do on the turn? Most often the turn is going to miss you and a check invites a bluff or a weak hand to bet you out of the pot. But making any real bet without a hand seems expensive.

BTW, What is the point of this bet? Is it to get everyone to fold? Like a bluff? If that is the case I guess I answered my own question about 3 or more players. Is it to disguise what you raised with?

One last question, not about CBs.... I am really trying to learn NL and play FR only. Is there value in reading the 6 max posts, or is the aggression factor that much greater that I would be learning some expensive habits?

Thanks for your time
Dave

First of all, the term "continuation bet" just means you are continuing to bet. It doesnt mean that you missed the flop.

When you raise preflop, you will normally want to make a CB, whether or not you hit the flop. Now, I said "normally" not always.

After that we get into the "it depends" area. If there was an easy answer for this question, then the good players wouldnt have any where near as much of an edge on the avg players as they do.

In general though, if you raise to $5 and get a caller and then bet $10 into the $11 or $12 pot with AA on a K64 flop, then make sure you also bet $10 when you have TT on that same flop.

If you get called when you have TT, then you should normally give up since there are not really any draws on that flop. When you get to higher stakes, people will start calling your flop bet with 88 on that flop and then the mind games really start.

Against OBSERVENT opponents...you simply can't CB every time...cuz they'll float the flop to take it away from you on the turn. But, against unobservent opponents I CB EVERY TIME - you'll be SO surprised how often it works with SCARY flops for you. I make the same size CB (in relation to the pot) whether I hit a monster or complete air. This disguises your hand on both sides: they don't know if you have air or not when you have a monster, and they don't know if you have a monster or not when you have air.
