1/2 B&M No limit hand advice

Postby idog519 » Sat Dec 04, 2004 1:44 pm

1/2 No limit max $250 buy in my stack is $200. I get Ks10s on the button after a few limpers I limp. Flop 2s3s6d. It gets check the guy on my right who bets $15. I raise to $35. First position calls? Hmm.... Bettor to my right folds. What does this guy have. I put him on a draw, this is my first mistake.Turn came 10c helpin my hand. He checks I bet $50 (second stupid mistake). Player raises me to $120. So now I wake up and realize that he could have the straight or a set. So now its a math problem. There is now $265 in the pot and I have to call to $70 to see my flush on the river. Well the odds aren't quite there almost 4-1 and teh odds of hitting my flush now is 5-1, but the pot is pretty decent and I call. The river is a spade and I bet the rest of my stack. Out of frustration he calls and I win. I think my biggest mistake was betting the turn. What do you guys think? I should have realized that him over calling the flop meant he had a monster. Any advice?

I like your flop raise, but when it got called by the EP, Im almost positve he has a set.
I check behind him at the turn every time.

Yeah he cold called a bet and a raise cold. He has no need to protect his hand so he opted to slow play the flop. Unless you have him marked as a huge calling station, he is holding a monster everytime.

I like your raise in postion on the flop, but as you said the misplay was the bet on the turn, I disagree with kennyG that he has to be on a monster, I have seen a lot of cold calls at similar tables on weak draws. So it comes down to your read, If he already cold called $35 on the flop betting $50 on the turn isn't enough if you think he is on a draw and you want to put preassure on him. I still would have checked. That really was the whole purpose of your raise after the flop anyways, was to get a free card if you missed your flush on the turn. The reraise call was borderline but like you said it was a big pot. I would probably call as you did, it is also possible that your opponant was playing rags and flopped two pair and you have a lot more outs than just the flush.

checking the turn is absloutely mandatory in my opinion. the flop raise is more debatable and could go eitherway. my default play would be not to raise. this is a hand you dont want to be blown off of. this is even more true on the turn. you put yourself in a position where you had to make a very tough decision, one you possibly made a mistake on (results notwithstanding) at this point in the hand you may possibly have the best hand and in limit i would bet usually in case he does have a draw as he cant blow you off your hand but in no limit this is different because if he moves in you will be sicjk. its kind of like what sklansky says about if a raise will make you want to throw up then a bet is a mistake. if it is an easy call or fold then bet away but if that raise is gonna make you sick and cost you a resonable chance to win the pot then check. it would even be true if your hand was the AKs and you hit a k. dont allow yourself to get blown off a hand that has a reasonable chance to win.

Maybe I'm a little more agressive than some other players but I think the raise in position is the best play for a couple of good reasons. First it is a great way to get info on how strong your opponant is. If your opponant flopped a monster such as a set or top 2, they are going to reraise big maybe all in. This is fine as long as your raise is a small enough amount that you are not pot committed. Yes you will lose some money a few times with this raise but the positives are huge. Frst and most important you gain control of the betting it is very rare that your opponant will lead into you again after the turn. If you miss your flush on the turn, you will get to see the river for free. If you hit your flush it is much more hidden, people often won't put you on a flush draw since you raised while just on the draw. Plus if you do hit your flush you opponant is going to have more trouble folding since there is more $$ in the pot. And finally you may be able to push your opponant off the best hand, if the original bettor is playin 2nd pair or top pair with a weak kicker and no draw, you often will be able to win the pot without having to hit your hand, this more than makes up for the money you lose when folding to a big reraise.
