Bad Beat or bad misread?

This hand killed me right here. I was 4k chips above the average. All I had to do is sit back and wait to get in the money, and boom this hand comes along. The main reason I reraised all in because I thought he had trips. Im an idiot for doing that. My friends were in the room, so I minimized the screen so they wouldn't see. They make fun of me for playing online poker. I lost my concentration, and lost 90% of my chips. I'm still in, but only 220 make money, and 350 remain.

Well, I ended up getting 215th place, where the top 220 get in the money. I was down to my last 300 chips and the small blind put me all in. The people at the table were really nice waited the maximum amount of time using their time bank. There were about 233 people left when this happened. That hand took about 5 minutes. I was lucky, but yeah. This was my first big MTT.

This is my first post at this great forum. My main language isn’t English so my grammar is not the best...

But I think this is a very interesting tournament hand and I have some comments to it. You didn’t play it well but you already know that... I am not a great tournament player myself but there are some obvious mistakes here.

First I would raise before the flop. I know that Cloutier writes that raising hands in early position are “queens or better, not jacks or better”, but at this time of the tournament I would raise. With jacks you don’t want the other players to see a cheap flop with mediocre holdings. If I raised to 900 I would be pot committed if seat 5 or 9 nine decided to push. If one of the other players played back at me I would fold if the reraise was too big. A raise to 600 wouldn’t commit me to the pot but it would let the BB and hands like AQ and KQ get in for cheap. But a limp is also fine if you don’t fell comfortable on the flop if it contains an overcard (one or more overcards to your jacks will flop 57 % of the time).
When the flop doesn’t contain overcards and the BB leads out with a minimumraise I think the best move is to reraise to 900 or 1200. It is not likely that the flop helped the shortstack behind you though it is possible he flopped a set. The big blind can have any hand - if I was big blind I would bet this flop with a lot of hands that JJ could beat. Most of the times JJ will be the best hand on this flop. The other players don’t put you on a big pair since you didn’t raise before the flop.
The 5 on the turn has probably not helped anyone and the big blind makes another minimumraise. This is a play a lot of average tournament players make: A small raise on flop and a small raise on turn. 9 out of 10 times this indicates that the player has a weak hand (here I would put him on a hand like T7, Q8 or KQ). The player want to see the river but he doesn’t want to commit too many of his chips. It is similar to the “blocking bets” Iceman describes, but here made on flop and turn. Most of the times you can make the player fold with a reraise (I have to know the player I am up against to do this). If there wasn’t a shortstack sitting behind me I would make a big reraise (900-1500) with a lot of hands (a pair of 6's, ace high, gutshot draw). With the shortstack behind me I would still make a big reraise with JJ.
The big blinds bet on river indicates that the river helped him and I think a call here is the best move because both of you have a big stack and you don’t want to loose 5000 of your chips if he has a straight.
The hand shows how important it is to be the aggressor. The big blinds weak lead gave him a cheap draw to his 8 outer. A raise on flop or turn will probably make him fold and if he calls you can just check the river.
I don’t know if you have decided to quit poker but if you are still going to play I agree with Nashvegas that you must play more aggressive. I have uninstalled my poker programs several times but I am still playing (and winning most of the time).

Very nice analysis Kalle. One minor point though. You cant lead out with a minimum raise. Its not a raise unless someone else bets first and then you RAISE. The BB led out with a minumum BET. No big deal, but it get confusing at times when you say you raised when you really didnt.

Well, no I didn't uninstall PartyPoker yet... After I lost about $230, I went to sleep. I was so pissed of, woke up at 7:00 a.m. Went to my regular 50/NL table. Won $180 in profit and that made me feel alot better. I then made a HUGE mistake and registered for 100+9 SnG. I actually played real good poker and took second place, after some luck on the river to knock out the guy who took third place. After some more time at the 50/NL table, I'm almost up $400 just today alone. Good thing I didn't waste all my money while I was on tilt..
