First Time Post - Advice after first 1000 PT Hands?

Postby aeroace » Sun Apr 03, 2005 1:55 pm

I've been loitering on this forum for the past couple of months, as the info is very valuable to those of us just learning the game -- especially as I am really just getting started into "serious" poker, though used to be a blackjack counter years ago. I bought PT and accumulated about 20,000 hands to try and understand all it can do (amazing program), and my stats are beginning to improve. Started out at 40 VP$IP and now in the lower 20's (but average hovering around 30, so I'm still trying to tighten up. I'm most comfortable at NL1/2 on Party, though I try NL2/4 here and there. UB seems much looser (PT VP$IP 20-40 range lately, while Party is in the high teens with more tight players). Hard for me to concentrate on more than one table at a time, but it may be I'm playing too many hands. I've read Skansky, Hilger, Voorhaus, etc. but there's too much to absorb until I get more experience. My summary for the last 1000 hands are:

VP$IP 30%
PFR 8%
Flop AF 2.63
Turn AF 3.62
River AF 2.55

PTBB/hr is 11.35
Went to SD 21%
Won at SD 34%
Folded to River Bet 44%
Attempt Steal Blinds at 27%

I'm going to try out the hand converter to ask more specific advice, but I'd appreciate any insight into major leaks you can see in these stats so far, and what I need to do to improve. Thanks!

Well assuming you are playing 1 table and get 60 hands per hout , your PTBB/100 is running at about 19 which is fantastic. However 1000 hands is nothing - most 'first check ups' are at 10,000+ so it's difficult to tell.

At those stakes 30% vp$ip would seem a little high (the other stats look ok to me except perhaps you need a touch more aggression on the flop).

But I'm cetianly in no place to criticise someone who is making almost $50/hr on one table..

Something looks wrong here. You go to showdown 21% and only win 34% of showdowns? I cant see how your win rate would be very good.

I need more details. You also said you played 20,000 hands but these are only stats from 1000 of the hands. Why?

Thanks much for the responses. I've been using PT to observe and study a lot before I starting actual play on the internet, hence 20,000 "observed" but it gives me a lot of insight into what the PT stats mean when using GameTime+ in real time. I've only played about 1000 hands when tracking on PT. When I look at the stats I posted, I made a couple of errors. The PTBB is per 100 hands, not per hour and for the NL1/2 which is more than 900 of the hands played. The showdown rate looked weird to me to, but I've checked it and it looks OK. Then again, with so few hands so far, could it be I'm winning before getting to the river? I'll look to see if I've made any other errors in posting my stats (PT is such a great program, but a little complex for a beginner!).

The win rate of 11.35PTBBs / 100 hands is till very good. Great actually. But as excession said , after 1000 hands it doesnt mean much. You could easily win 1 or 2 big hands and it would jack your win rate way up.

Keep playing and working on your game and see what your win rate looks like after 5-10K hands. That will be a better indication of where your at. You really need more like 20k hands to get a true handle on it though.

Your showdown win % should be as close to 60% as possible in my opinion. MIne is currently 63.29%

Thanks for the great advice. It's going to take me awhile to get to 20k hands unless I start multi-tabling it. Hopefully, it will get a little easier to account for loose/tight, aggressive/passive, odds and outs, stack sizes, and position with experience!
