Reading players?

Postby Pok 7's » Thu Sep 07, 2006 12:25 am

Wondering if there's any way to improve this aspect of my game? I mean how do you go about determining the type of player someone is in regards to things like: How they respond to pressure, whether that can be pushed off hands, etc.

I'm playing mainly 6 max now and naturally you tend to be involved in more hands with the same people people more often. I'm almost subconsciously working on reading hands whether I'm in hands or not. However the player reading skills are an area of my game I want to improve on . I run GT+ while I'm playing so I can get an idea of the type of player they are. But are there ways to improve getting reads on specific players? I'll admit my notetaking is meh usually and fairly limited in terms of info.

I'm only playing 1/2 currently and not real sure how much of this applies to most LLHE players. Usually just playing the cards seems to be the best option the majority of the time. Is notetaking the best way to work on this or are there other things I should be considering?

At 1/2 I'm not sure how useful reads are anyway. Even the good players play straightforwardly because the donks make tricky play useless.

But anyway, I prefer PAHUD to GT and use their stats heavily, especially at the cryptos where i run into the same guys a lot of the time. Stats like won showdown when raise turn are useful in shorthanded games so you can see who likes the semibluff. Always check mucked hands. Use the notes for other habits players have. A lot of players at 6max will only raise the flop for free cards and wait till the turn when they actually have the goods. Some guys have normal stats but really overplay pocket pairs. Notes are also useful for other quirks - like I sometimes get players at 6max tables who always limp aces. It doesnt help me much when they have aces, but it lets me know when they don't.

I've been debating about getting PAHUD, I've heard nothing but good things about it. I downloaded the trial version but all the configuring when it comes to picking the stats I want up it seemed a little more involved that I'm used to and never even ran it on a table. I'm what many people would refer to as "dumb" when it comes to things like that. I can't tell you how many PT threads I started on the other forum when I first got that....and I still don't know much about the program.

Yeah, it really does make a difference. I have about 12-15 stats overlaid without major clutter, and a few more in the popup stats. Obviously need a large sample before you can take the numbers seriously and you dont really need all the numbers all the time, but i seem to register them better when they're on the screen instead of in a popup box.

Regardless of the level you play reads are important, on large networks where you don't see the same players often it becomes alot more difficult especially with people coming and going.

I usually use PAHUD for general things like basing when to isolate PF and whether or not I should value bet/semi-bluff or flat out bluff based on their stats.

I take alot of notes, on how they play particular hands and their betting patterns and what not. Just pay attention, and you'll be suprised how often people do the same things over and over.
