Poker Podcast Reviews - The long promised article

Cardplayer's podcast that covers many of the major circuit events. It has good interviews and also has a lot of good poker tips. That being said, this is mostly an entertainmentpodcast but a very entertaining one including the hosts (even though some aren't a fan of Joe Sebok). This is one of the highest quality in content and production quality of the pokerpodcasts . The only thing I wish would change is that since it follows the major tournament circuit, it's only available when there is a tourney going on. I wish it was available on a more regular basis. Since it follows the circuit, it does cover a lot of news related to the pro poker circuit.

-

This is one of the few podcasts that was pure and simple poker. There is very little talk about pro players, very few interviews with known players, very little fluff other than poker. It started out with the hosts covering stuff that happens at their local home game and card club. They do a lot of poker analysis and had a very popular segment called "Columbo's one minute mysteries" where they would give a hand with a decision on the end on one episode with the ending on the next episode. You may notice I've been using past tense when describing thispodcast . They have recently published their last official episode but are leaving the feed live in case they get to the point where they want to release a special episode. It is still well worth going back and listening to their past episodes though since very little is time specific information.

This was the first podcast I started listening too initially as a podcast. I had listened to The Circuit off and on, but not as a podcast since they didn't have a feed at that time. Pokerdiagram was the first one I came across that was basically a commentary of live online play, which appealed to me since it was different. They also have semi regular listener tournaments. These tournaments are fun and help build acomradery amongst the listeners, much like the BTP tourneys. The production quality is fair and the hosts are entertaining. They both seem to be comfortable talking and I'm sure the alcohol that is usually involved, helps that. If you are looking for strictly poker content, then this might not be the show for you, but the community is very fun and open.

Ante Up Podcast is podcast put out by the St. Petersburg Times and is a well produced and has a good mix of many features. The have had good interviews with pro players, often cover different aspects of poker covering everything from tipping dealers to identifying bluffs. The jokes are a little corny and they can't swear (what's the point of having it on apodcast then?) but it's also one of my favorite podcasts that are going right now. They also picked up the Columbo's one minute mystery segment after Lord Admiral called it quits.

-

Ante up radio sounds just like a radio show. That isn't necessarily a good thing. The good is the production quality is good, the interviews they have sound good which you don't always get with a lot of thesepodcasts, but sometimes it sounds a little to staged. He does get a lot of good interviews and many of them I've found very interesting including some strong opinions on the Sklansky interview and overall it's worth listening too.

MySportsRadio.com's poker podcast is more of an entertainment podcast and really has little in the way of poker content. They do occasionally have interviews that are interesting, but most of the podcast is revolved around the large community that they have. This is more of a community that happens to play poker rather than a community of poker players. The host of the podcast said he wants the podcast to feel like a friendly home game, which it does, but if you aren't a part of the click, you may feel out of the loop as there seems to be little effort to make it easy for casual listeners and more trying to get loyal followers and keep involved with many of the non-poker related themes that frequent thepodcast. Some times it feels a little to much like the host is practicing his stand up comedy instead of being a true poker show - which as I mentioned, seems to be the shows goal.

-

This is an infrequently updated tips podcast put out by many of the pros of the FTP site. The tips are short, and oriented to beginners where I doubt many would get any earth shattering advice from. They feel more like commercials than truly tips.

-

The pocketfives.com podcast is a very unique podcast as it is tailored almost entirely to online tournament players. This is a weekly podcast that covers the successes of the pocketfives.com members, has interviews with many of the top online players, who are normally pocketfivers as well, and gives poker advice that is oriented to the major online MTTs that run regularly. There isn't anything flashy about this podcast and there isn't an effort made to make this entertaining. This one feels more like a news show than anything, but is a decent podcast for it's audience.

-

Netorbettor.com is a well put together site that is unfortunately sorely neglected. The podcast seems to have fallen suit. The podcast was probably one of the better podcasts that I've listened to. It was a strictly technical podcast that seems to be oriented with LHE. Not my cup of tea, but still the best advice I had gotten from any podcast.

-

Rounders is a canadian radio show that gets redistributed as a podcast. It's a weekly hour show that covers all kinds of various topics in the poker world. Everything from tips to interviews. Again this is another not very flashypodcast but I like the content and is one of the few shows that actually has a pro as one of the hosts. Since they are an actual radio show, I think it helps them get some of the big names in what is happening sooner than most of thepodcasts , including the circuit. The circuit would probably beat them to the punch if they would post a show on the final day of each event. So far they are the only show I've heard Jamie Gold on, as of yet.

-

This podcast is another podcast of some one playing online poker and you get commentary. He seems to be greatly influenced by PokerDiagram. He plays low stakes with the first 2 episodes involving play money. This is a relatively newpodcast and it's hard to tell if he will stick with it since it's just the one guy doing it. The production quality is poor but was getting better in later episodes. Their isn't much in the way of teaching poker tactics, it's more of a play-by-play of a low stakes player. That being said, it is kind of interesting to hear what he's thinking as he learns the game.

- No working feed that I could find

Holdem radio is an online radio show that has it's archived shows that it calls a podcast but it really isn't. A podcast should be a show with a working feed. I don't often listen to the show just because it isn't either easy or convenient to listen to without the feed. They do on occasions get some pretty interesting shows that I will go through the effort of getting. The last one I took the effort for, was the ZeeJustin interview.

I've heard things about this podcast but I haven't actually heard it yet. Another casualty of a feedless "podcast".

There are countless others. Many are small, defunct or have almost unlistenable audio quality. If you feel like finding some of those, a good directory of them available can be found at the following site:
Poker Podcast Listing service: thepokerpod.com
http://www.thepokerpod.com/index.htm

Of course, I don't just listen to poker podcasts. If others are interested in general podcasts, I could give reviews for those too.

As I am a professional procrastinator, it's nice to add a few more diversions to my repetoire

Cheers

I got feeds for holdem radio so I should be editing that portion soon. Still waiting on the poker edge. Imagine that, I get help quickly from a small, independant site but the large corporation is slow in replying to my simple request.
