At a full ring I will almost never call for 1/2 the pot. The majority of the time I will fold or I will have the nuts and raise. However, I have been making these calls sometimes SHed and I was wondering what everyone else though about it. I make the calls for 2 reasons
1) It is less likely that someone has the nut, nut so I am giving up a reasonable amount of equity by folding. Also SHed it is much more likely he is playing a 1 way hand that I beat.
2) More importantly folding teaches my opponent to bluff at me which I don't want. I much prefer them thinking I am a CS and play predictable poker where they bet with hands and check without them.
For example a hand that I played yesterday (I don’t have PTO on this computer so this is from memory).
I have from IP and check (this is poker room so it is 1/1). Opponent checks
Flop is . Opponent bets ½ pot into me and I call.
Turn is . Opponent checks, and I check.
River is . Opponent pots and I call.
Opponent is loose aggressive and has been bluffing a lot. I call the flop because I am IP and I think I have enough of a hand to continue or to take it away from him on later streets. I checked the turn because he would have CR an A2, A4 + a little bit of the high, and would have called with an A5, 24. I call the river because
- there is a good check we are chopping, and a small chance (around equal) that either of us scoop
- I showed weakness by checking behind on the turn.
- I don’t want him to think that he can lead into me and push me off hands on the river.
What do you guys think?
