AKo can be a frustrating hand to play. How to play it most effectively is something many of us struggle with. In this situation I think you need to push, which you essentially did. You only have about 12BB, so a smooth call is for a third of your stack. Since the greatest strength of AKo is the fold equity of a big re-raise you want to give your opponent a chance to make the right move and go away.
Unfortunately you don't have enough chips left this time to intimidate your opponent. As Sklansky points out in Tournament Poker for Advanced Players - the optimum re-raise with AKo is five times the pot. Less then that and you get called too often. More than that and you are putting too many chips at risk to warrant the play.
This time you are in "all-in or fold" mode and AKo is a good push. You just got unlucky. That's tournament poker. It is a cruel cruel game.

A poker tournament is a test of your skill versus your opponents luck.
