Hey guys,

I'm experimenting a bit with the following line, which is really a basic play in NL, for example when you have an overpair and CR allin on the turn.

Suppose you raise PF (you do this a lot, so that your opponent has no clue what you have this time) from MP-LP but get called by a later position player. Flop is HU, so you're playing OOP. You lead pot, and get flat called. On the turn you notice that if you bet pot and he calls, then there is close to a full pot bet left on the river. Now the idea is to checkraise allin instead of potting it. Prerequisite is, of course, that the stack sizes are as described, and that a free card is not a big problem.

There's a few situations where I think this may work well, but first I'll give an unsuccessful attempt from last night:

I have [Ad][As][Td][Ts] and raise 4bb in LP. Button calls. (This happens every other orbit.) It's HU to the flop, which comes [Qd][Jd][6s]. I pot, opponent calls. I know he'd raise a set here, so he either has a draw or doesn't give me credit for a hand.
Turn: [2s]. I check, opponent bets 1/2 pot?? I checkraise max.

1) You have top set, and there is a flush draw out, but on the turn a straight hits. I will often bet again here, especially when there is either a lot more or a lot less money left, but if a good player has position on you it's easy for him to outplay you.

2) You flop a big draw, pot flop, and feel your opponent is floating you. CR on turn puts maximal pressure on weaker hands, may force out a similar draw. Free card is no big problem here. Moreover, if opponent calls and you hit your draw then you win a full stack, whereas normally you wouldn't get paid a lot when you hit an obvious draw.

3) You have top set and have the obvious draws covered. In this case the free card is not so much of an issue.

Of course you want to do this against opponents who know how to prey on weakness. On the other hand, I think that against weaker players you'll see a lot of confusion calls. In the example hand, for example, opponent thought for a while and then called with TJ56 no draws.

Thoughts? Or is this all pretty standard?

No comment on the strategy, but aren't you a decent favorite over bottom two there meaning this isn't a bluff but a value bet and he "sucked out" by you not sucking out (since more than half the remaining cards help you, any non-pairing diamond, spade, T Q, 2 or A).

He strikes me as a total donk playing the hand like that.

Well, in the example hand I clearly was a favorite, but I probably would have made the same play if the turn was a [2c]. Then still I'm in decent shape against the holding he happened to have, but I can't be certain that I'm ahead against all hands in his range there.

I'm still doubting whether the example shows that this is a good line to get money in when you have a big hand, or whether it shows that this line just makes your opponent think that you have AA (in which case his call with 2pr is understandable). I guess fold equity is minimal, as you will induce a confusion call quite a lot.
