FatEagle, I'd recommend using PT anyway -- not necessarily for observing your opponents, but for analyzing your play afterwards. It can be tremendously helpful to see which hands are losing money, what sort of win rate you have, and how you compare with others.
FWIW, I feel like using the stats in real time has been helpful to my live game -- playing live now I find myself mentally rating how aggressive my opponents are, how loose they are preflop, etc., whereas before I relied on a general (and vaguely defined) "sense" of my opponent.
