Would you fold here? (hypothetical - your limit, 6 max)

Postby BigPhish » Wed Dec 27, 2006 1:57 am

I just got painfully stacked and I'm wondering whether or not I should have folded. I'll throw this out hypothetically because I'd be interested to know what you'd do at your limits, which are almost all well above mine.

Say you have a 450 big-blind stack and your opponent has you covered.

Folds to you on the button and you raise your JJ 4x. If you prefer 3x or 5x, that's fine too. SB calls.

Flop with 9BB in pot is QJ7 rainbow.

SB checks and you BTP. SB calls.

Turn with 27BB in pot is another 7. Your opponent bets the pot.

I'm interested in what you'd do in some different scenarios:

1) You raise around the size of the pot and he pushes. Do you call? What sort of read would it take to get you to fold here?

2) You call. SB pushes the river (call it a 2). Again, do you fold?

3) Would you push in response to his turn bet?

4) If you would consider folding, what if you had QQ? Having top FH against quads is what your 20+ buyin BR is for, yes? ;)

Re-reading this, it's probably the same answer to set-over-set, in which case the consensus here seems to be you get stacked and move on. But even with over double stacks? Is there any stack size you'd consider folding to the SB's flop or turn push?

Thanks...

If I had bottom set and one of the other cards paired I'd like to think I might be able to get away from it with a 450BB stack if the conditions were right, but I'd need to see him raise or reraise preflop.

I don't think there's any way you should consider folding in any of your examples.

If I'm ever playing a hand where I don't feel comfortable calling a push with QQ on a QJ77 board, then I should absolutely not ever be playing the game, because I'm way way over my head.

At $100 NL (my stakes), JJ is almost the same hand as QQ here, because you have to know that almost everybody would reraise QQ against your button steal. Nobody traps with QQ preflop at $100 NL. So the only hand beating you is still 77. However, the difference is that if you have QQ you can put them on JJ for a hand that you beat. With JJ you have to try hard to imagine them pushing A7.

I don't think I find a fold on the turn if I raise and he pushes. But for 4 stacks, I think about it very carefully.

If I flat call the turn and then he pushes the river, and the river card is something that even occasionally gets matched with a 7, say a 5689T or A, then I'm instacalling the river push because he could have just caught a boat with his 57 67 87 97 T7 or A7.

I am not sure that I would be able to fold it at the table, but in analysis for 250BB+ stack I would fold it on turn against a competent opponent. I mean the one that doesn't call raises with Q7s or J7s. If his range on turn is QQ, 77, QJ and he obviously wouldn't push turn with QJ after the board paired and he is behind AA and KK, it becomes a fold. If we had QQ I wouldn't mind playing for stack, if the bard were like QJ88 I also would think about playing for 250BB, though I think that I would fold for 400BB.

As to correct play here, I guess one should simply call turn and river if it is not an overbet.
