25PLO Straight Draw in BB

Postby Wking11 » Tue Feb 13, 2007 9:24 pm

I have got 3600 hands under my belt now and think I have a tiny bit of an idea of what I should be doing.

I have been playing tight and avoiding second-nut flushes, paired boards etc

But ocasionaly I think I have not been getting full value from my winners.

Should I be playing hands like this more agressively?

Villain was 68/0 after 35 hands.

Pot Limit Omaha Ring game
Blinds: $0.10/$0.25
7 players

Stack sizes:
UTG: $4.65
UTG+1: $22.45
MP1: $39.20
CO: $6.75
Button: $24.50
SB: $22.25
Hero: $11.95

Pre-flop: (7 players) Hero is BB with [Qd] [Kd] [6h] [Ad]
UTG calls, UTG+1 folds, MP1 calls, CO calls, Button folds, SB calls, Hero checks.

Flop: [3d] [Jh] [Tc] ($1.25, 5 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, UTG checks, MP1 checks, CO checks.

I am oop so just checked with the intention of calling a bet since I just have a straight draw. If I was on the button I might have bet.

Turn: [Ah] ($1.25, 5 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $1.2, 2 folds, CO calls, SB folds.

Made my straight so I bet

River: [Td] ($3.65, 2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets $2, Hero calls.

Board is paired so I checked/called his small bet. Afraid to lead out in case I get raised a large amount.

At a quick glance ... I like your river play 6max

I would have bet the flop. I'll expound more later ... but I'm 4-tabling PLO right now ... hard to pay attention to too much at once.

Edit:

Okay ... looked it over again ... yah your position makes this one difficult ... I'm really not against potting it on the flop ... as you don't really have a made hand yet even though you have tons of outs. I like the idea of checking for a bet ... however I would do it this way ... if a small bet is made: call ... if a large bet is made ... I would repot again on the flop. This is a hand where you want to get an opponent all in as early as possible (at least the way I play.) If you can make him fold after a pot bet so much the better.

Basically ... with stacks the way they are ... this especially would have given you opportunity to simply throw whatever's left in on the turn ... especially as it made your hand. I also think a 1/2 pot bet on the river might be good too. Really a judgement call ... for that you'd need that read on your opponent and what you think his holdings and tolerance for risk are.

A benefit to the check-call in this instance is that you can cause villain to think that you were chasing the flush draw and trying to shut him out on the turn. Induce the bluff, he'll bet his 2 pair whereas he may just fold to a river bet.

Some other thoughts on the hand:

Trips are less likely on this hand ... only because no-one put in a flop bet ... trips would want to get a little buildup more than likely ... with 3 opponents ... I'm certain that 2 pair would want to take a shot at it on the river ... making it an automatic call on the river the way this was played. You'll run into 2 pair here (and or a chopped pot with Broadway) more often than the full house.

The pot remained relatively small ... and in the end you were forced into a decision that you didn't want to make. This was an excellent hand for hard aggression ... which you did do on the turn. Ultimately though ... this is a hand where you want all your money in ASAP.

So like everything else in poker ... it all depends. Hopefully my thoughts will help in some way ... working through hands like this. There are other strategies.

It always sucks when the board pairs that's for sure.

So anyway ... results?[/i]
