Treatment of a bluff in Limit Omaha Hi/Lo

Postby starstealer » Tue May 10, 2005 8:14 am

You are at a weak and loose Omaha Hi/Lo table. The player two seats to your left (the BB in this hand) is a knowledgeable but weak player.

It is folded you and you are on the button with the "premium" holding of [5h] [4c] [Jc] [2h]. You raise to steal the blinds, but the BB calls anyway.

The flop is [Qs] [Ah] [7h] and the BB checks. What is your plan of attack?

If you don't fold, the turn is the [9h] and now BB leads out (whether you checked or bet on the flop) - what is your action now?

Hey its alright to not know what you are talking about (and with you, I don't think that's ever a question) - because that's why I am here.

Having both situations written out with a plan of attack is nice to know - so do you think you would've bet out on the flop after your opponent checked?

One problem with the fact that I haven't played much O8 (though I have tried now and then) is that I don't yet have a "feel" as far as hand strength that comes from experience...in other words, I know a 5-high flush is generally worth just about shit in omaha, and that a 2nd-nut low draw isn't exactly something to hoot and holler about either...but against just one opponent (who called a steal-raise from the BB), I'm prone to think the flush and the low-draw have a bit more value than in a multiway pot. Correct me if I'm wrong there.

Anyway, my thinking is that on the flop, you have a decent low-draw against one player with the 2-4-5, a flush draw that may or may not be worth anything...and based on your description of the BB, I'd figure there's probably an ace in his hand, so the flop isn't really looking all that great to him.

If he calls me and leads out the turn, I would call down because (1) your flush might be good, maybe he's betting aces up?, and (2) you still have a low draw. But if we check on the flop, then his turn bet doesn't signify as much strength to me, so I'd go ahead and raise.

Anyway, those are my thoughts...I grant you they're probably flawed on at least 18 or 19 levels, but I'm here to learn! :D

Well, here's my thoughts and what I did.

On the flop I bet into him to continue the bluff. I could be raising with AAxx for instance, so the flop is decent for that and would need to protect against the flush. However, as a decent player, he should expect me to make this bet with the flush draw as well as a semi-bluff. When I bet into him and then raise him on the turn, I'm essentially telegraphing that I've got the flush - and probably a good one. So when I raise him, the only way he calls is if he in fact does have the flush I am representing. There's no way that this particular player will call me down with a ten high flush for instance.

Also, my semi-bluff also has plenty of outs - including the 2nd nut low draw - which given the ace on the flop - is very likely to be good.

So in case you missed it, I bet into him on the flop and raised him on the turn to see him fold.

I bet the flop and, depending on the opponent, I usually call the turn. I like the idea of betting the turn against this opponent though, nice play!
