Two of these are bluffs

Postby Stoneburg » Thu Apr 12, 2007 3:18 pm

Played some 6-max NL $50 which I haven't done before, being a full ring nit and all. It was fun and I did OK, obviously playing a lot more aggressive than usual and bluffing a bit more. I wanted to get some opinions on my bluffs so I figured I'd post a few here. However, to make it a bit more interesting I've also added hands where I am not bluffing and I am leaving my own hand out.

So, in two of these hands I'm bluffing. Can you figure out which? If so, I would of course like your screen name so I can stay clear of you while I work on my game.

"#3 pencils and quadrille pads."
- Seymoure Cray (1925-1996) when asked what CAD tools he used to design the Cray I supercomputer; he also recommended using the back side of the pages so that the grid lines were not so dominant.

"Interesting - I use a Mac to help me design the next Cray."

Hand 1

Doesn' really look like a bluff - I mean, what could you have that is a bluff, unless you have two pair and think you can run him off of trips, which isn't really a good idea at all.

Hand 2

Of all the hands, this looks the most bluffy as the [Qd] is a good scare card, and the club draw missed. I think you will get looked up here by any PP greater than 7, and an occasional Ace.

Hand 3

Strong line - I use this line sometimes as a bluff, but not on boards like this. He will fold a lot of Kings, but I think you see plenty of weak Aces that are not folding.

Hand 4

Super scary board and SB doesnt seem to like it. Looks like you are bluffing, but it is a good bluff and should work frequently, but I think you can get away will a much smaller bet.

1: If hand 1's a bluff, you're not going to last very long in poker. You'd better have a boat here, or at least the nut flush.

2: Classic bluff position. You shouldn't be limping with anything that hits this board unless it's QJs or 67s/78s and it's not too smart to bet this river with the underfull...so I lean towards this being a bluff.

3: Like 1, this shouldn't be a bluff since you have little to no fold equity. You have AQ+ IMO

4: This could def be a bluff.

So, 2+4.

My first conclusion after reading the hands was that 2 and 4 are bluffs....

I will try to explain how and what I thought when I read your hands.. maybe it helps (maybe it will help me) ..

hand 1. I think you had nut flush there... I would even say that your hand was [Ad][Kd]..
hand 2. You call PF from UTG+1 so you probably have an ace with good kicker because you called the raise also.. Hmm.. now looking at it, I would even say that this was not a bluff and that you in fact held [Ac][Qs] (I am not really guessing the suits, it's just for the visuals) or better and that you hoped for the guy to bet into you on turn after you checked.. seeing that he didnt you took a swing at him on the river.. he folded I guess..
hand 3. Looking now at this hand I think it might be a bluff... I am even putting you on [Qd][Qh] or some other PP that is not kings nor aces... I don't know.. When I first looked at that hand I really thought it's not a bluff, but looking at it again, I think it is... I don't think it's a good spot to bluff, but, it might be bluff just for that reason..
hand 4. I first though it's a bluff, and now I still think it is. Why? Cause you felt that the guy missed the flop and didn't take initiative with [As][Kd] or some card like that, and you bluffed him...

I might be very wrong, at least I tried :) ... In fact, when I was taking that "Donkey test", my bluffing score was lower than any other as far as I remember..

Looks like pretty much everyone agrees that 2 & 4 are bluffs (Redbarracuda was the only one who thought #3 was a bluff), it's half right. The answer is #2 and #3.

Hand #1
I have [6d] [5d] for the flush.

Hand #2
I have 44 so since I am playing QQ774 as my hand it's definetely a bluff.

Hand #3
I have [8s] [6s] here so it's definetely a bluff. His bet doesn't look like it wants to be called and I have been known to play monsters like this. I also showed which put him on tilt and made him call my preflop all-in later with ATo. Meta game value!

Hand #4
I have JT for top two-pair.

Opponents folded in all these hands.

This would be more interesting iof you told me what I had (me being the villian). Then I could tell you if I would call you or not. I guess sonce villain folded all 4 hands, thats not possible.

Hand #2 was an obvious bluff.

actually yes... hand 2 is an "obvious" bluff... probably that's why I started thinking against that solution and made an excuse to not call it a bluff... when I first looked at it I was sure that it IS a bluff.. now, looking at it again (and knowing the answer of course) I again see it as a bluff...
Mah.. I already said that donkey test told me I suck at bluffs, so guessing/realizing #3 is a bluff I can be rather proud... lol ..
