MTT Strategy Guide

Postby digital scar » Tue May 17, 2005 2:24 am

Hello everyone this is my 1st post here in the MTT section. I have read Texas Kowboy's articles on the main site and think there is some valuable information in them but what I was wondering is if a few(or many) of you out there who play alot of the MTT's would be interested in getting together some kind of rough MTT guide. I realize that this would not be easy because like all poker related questions, they could easily be responded to with the answer of "well it depends." If any of you have looked at the sticky over in the Limit Hold'em section about "How to Beat On Line Hold Em" something to the effect of this is what would be interesting. Again some strategy about how each phase of the tounament is played along with hands to avoid and hands that should be played(and how) at each stage of the tournament would certainly be interesting. I hope some of you out there might find this intriguing and decide to do it. What would be even cooler is if withen your stategy guide you cite specific hands that took place in one of your tournaments and then how you applied a ceratin strategy to that specfic hand. If something like this has been done before just point my nose in the right direction..but if not have at it if you like. :)
Thanks all.

Kowboy

If I ain't sinkin', well I must be swimin' If I ain't dead, I must be livin' Livin' is the thing, that scares me the most And if I ain't sleepin', well I better be fishin' If I ain't anchored I will be driftin' But all and all, I'm doing pretty good, since I hit my third coast!

I'd love to make one but, I really don't think many people would agree with what I have to say. The more 'common' winning style to these tourneys is TAG, while I play LAG instead. This gives me better results personally, but I don't know if it would really be appreciated to have someone disagree with almost everything said by the more respected members of the forum

Not that I think there's anything wrong with how they play, of course. It's just the way I like to do it.

Hey Flop, that is exactly what I was going for with this idea. If you are willing to put up with people criticizing your play then I would love to read about your strategy. The whole idea behind this thing is to break away from the norm and just discuss what type of style(s) work for you. The interesting thing is why do they work for you? I don't really think anybody would have a problem with you dis-agreeing with some of the well repected members here(maybe I'm wrong but I thought the idea here at BTP was to explore new thoughts and ideas).

If everybody played the exact same way then nobody would make money, everbody would break even. Now I don't claim to be an expert or even a good novice in the MTT's but I would like to get much better at them and I do know that there are those of you out there who do very well at them and that is what I'm looking to get at with this thing. Maybe a LAG style is better in these types of touneys, buy why? What is it about that style that works for you? I hope I don't come off as being bossy or arrogant or selfish about this thing, we all want to learn and improve right? I was just hoping we could all put together some interesting styles and strategies into a semi-formulated whole so that we can figure out what we are doing wrong or not even wrong but ya know just maybe some new ways of playing that may work better now that the face of poker keeps changing from day to day.

Certainly a tournament strategy from 20 years ago would not work today, or would it? Thats the idea with this thing.

Flop, if you are willing to be criticized a bit for your strategy but are willing to post it and have it be discussed then by all means I think you should. We could all learn something from each other and that is what I hope to happen.

Anyhoo thank you both Kowboy and Flop for showing interest, I think we might be able to show some amazing results if we do get something going.
Thanks All...

Alrighty, I'll work on something and post it up today or tomorrow. Would you guys prefer if Imake a different topic for it? Like "The art of the MTT LAG" or something? This way, it wouldn't confuse people having someone talk about their TAG strategy and then underneath it I'm talking about play 85s for a raise

Either way is fine, though.

Flop, actually I think if you posted it in here with a big heading that says something to the effect fo "THE ART OF THE LAG IN MMT'S" would be fine. This way we can keep all of it together so that we can read one post about at TAG style and then scroll down and read another about a LAG style. Since the posts will be in the same room maybe this will help to filter to two styles together, or it might be easier to identify similarities and differences between the two. I think that as long as you put a disclaimer at the beginnig of your documnet it would be fine. I don't know for sure 'cuase I'm certainly not the forum moderator but I wouldn't think Kowboy would have a problme with it. Either way it's up to you.

I am excited that you and Kowoboy are going to work on this thing. I am very excited to read what you both have to say. GL to both of you. Thanks for doing this.
