Played at Lucky Chances and had $360 in front of me after about three hours. MP is the villain. Seven handed.
UTG folds, UTG+1 limps for $4, MP makes it $15, CO folds, I call OTB with , blinds fold. $44 in the pot. Read on villain is his preflop selection isn't the greatest(meaning he limps in alot), but he folds to strength unless he has a decent hand, and is Tagish mostly. He knows I'm tight and have been playing very tight...he's not one of the stupid ones I usually play. First time I've played with him.

Flop is . Checks to me and I check. Turn is . UTG+1 checks and Villain bets $10. I call behind, UTG+1 folds and we are heads up. Pot is $64.

River is . Bingo! He bets $35, after about ten seconds I raise it to $100 straight, he instantly says all in(which is $200 more at these tables; spread limit is $4-$200). $200 more to me.

Help???

I finally called...he flipped up 55 for quads.

It took me a couple of minutes to make this call. He sounded so strong when he pushed(he did it verbally without hesitation)...and my first impression of this river reraise was that my hand wasn't good. A bet on the flop by this guy would have probably folded me and the other player who was excruciatingly tight, so Villain checking on a 753 flop where only a hand like 44 or 66 is going to hurt you isn't too bad IMO. I really didn't think he was capable of bluffing a player with my image who raises on the river, so I was sure he had hit the board pretty well. And I believed this guy was smart enough to not 3-bet the river with only a straight on a paired board.

I guess the thing is the first thing my instincts told me was that I was behind...only after a fair amount of convincing I made a crying call here...and it was very hard for me to put the money into the pot. I am happy to say that most of the answers given to my OP are things that went through my head at one level or another.

Saw this guy later fold on a 7s7x4sAx9s river to a push of $40 by a female who was telegraphing that she wanted a call pretty much...the woman showed 74 after he folded...the fold was impressive to me.
