PLO$2 - Bet the turn?

Postby AkuAnkka » Tue May 29, 2007 7:06 am

I don't know how much you care to comment these micro limit games, but I'm at the very beginning of the learning curve and, therefore, this is where I'm playing and this is what I'm posting ;)

So, my postition is not too good here, but I deside to limp and flop the top two pair. I check both the flop and the turn and so do everyone else. Do you think my play here is too weak? Would you bet either the flop or the turn?

Would you raise this hand PF to get a better position? There is four players behind me so it is not that easy to get the button in my opinion.

I think I should have bet on the flop or at least on the turn to force draws out and build somewhat bigger pot. According to previous hands I'm quite sure if anyone had a set he would bet it.

PokerStars Pot-Limit Omaha High, $0.02 BB (9 handed) from (Format: Bet The Pot)

Button ($3.36)
SB ($6.19)
BB ($4.55)
UTG ($6.73)
UTG+1 ($3.08)
Hero ($1.90)
MP2 ($2.04)
MP3 ($2.86)
CO ($3.17)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with [Tc], [Js], [8s], [Qd].
1 fold, UTG+1 calls $0.02, Hero calls $0.02, MP2 calls $0.02, MP3 calls $0.02, CO calls $0.02, 1 fold, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($0.14) [Qs], [3d], [Jh] (7 players)
SB folds, BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero checks, MP2 checks, MP3 checks, CO checks.

Turn: ($0.14) [6d] (6 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero checks, MP2 checks, MP3 checks, CO checks.

River: ($0.14) [4c] (6 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero checks, MP2 checks, MP3 bets $0.04, CO folds, BB folds, UTG+1 folds, Hero calls $0.04, MP2 folds.

Final Pot: $0.22

Results in white below:
Hero has Tc Js 8s Qd (two pair, queens and jacks).
MP3 has 8h 2h 4d Jc (two pair, jacks and fours).
Outcome: Hero wins $0.22.

Playing at the micro levels while learning is a very smart move. Don't be afraid to post hands for feedback. The play at those levels is usually very straight forward so it's a good place to learn the fundamentals of the game. In fact, I think the games from the $2 level to the $100 level are pretty much beatable by the same strategy. Above that, hand selection is not enough of an edge due to players increased aggression and hand reading skills.

Regarding the hand...

You have a great hand. Make that [8s] a [9s] and you have an ultra premium hand. Your position is unfortunately pretty mediocre, being 3:d to act at a full ring table. There's no way you can buy the button so that's not a reason to raise, however, I wouldn't mind a raise anyway just because of the value of the hand. I prefer raising this hand from EP to raising something like AAxx, since you'll catch a piece of the flop so much more often and your hand will be more disguised. Still, I think a simple call is the most prudent and definetely smart if you're inexperienced. In fact, you could chose to never raise preflop and still be well off.

On the flop there's about a brazillion straight draws, of which you have the worst since a 9 won't make you the nuts. You should DEFINETELY bet your top two here because at the time, you figure to have the best hand, but pretty much any card above a 7 that doesn't boat you could ruin your hand. 3 people have checked already, you should pot it and if everyone folds, that's fine too.

Flop got checked around and nobody bet the turn either, now you're pretty much 95% sure you have the best hand unless someone turned a set of sixes. AQ flush draw appeared making your hand even more vulnerable though, so you shoould pot it to protect it, and once again, if everyone folds you're fine with that too.

River I would just check down as played. A straight is now out and 7 people saw the flop so it's not impossible that it is out. Either way, you've sort of missed your chance to get any value. I would call the bet because it is so small, but if it was pot sized I'd frankly just fold it because I'd be annoyed that I failed to bet the earlier streets.

Short answer:

Yes, you played it too weakly. Top two is definetekly a hand worth betting, more so than bottom set in my opinion. If you get raised, you will usually have to dump it, but if you give free cards on boards like this and call the river, you will stand to lose a lot of money in the long run.

Our Swedish friend pretty much nailed it; care to elaborate on why you think top two is more bettable than bottom set Stone?

Thank you for your detailed posts.

Actually, I kind of knew I played the hand badly when posted it. Just wanted to be sure what would have been your strategy.

About the micro limit games and posting more hands; I might be posting again soon because played a terrible session yesterday. Didn't lose much, but in my opinion almost everything I lost was due to my own mistakes instead of luck and it sucks. It really does.
